50 Years and Still Paddling: Great Smith River Canoe Race Returns May 16 50th running draws early registrations as race day approaches Ready, set, paddle! The 50th running of the Great Smith River Canoe and Kayak Race returns Saturday, May 16, at Albee Beach in Wolfeboro. Hosted by the Wolfeboro Lions Club, this milestone event continues a long-standing tradition and is shaping up to be one you won’t want to miss. The four-mile course features calm stretches, a ¼-mile section of Class 2 rapids, and two portages — offering both challenge and fun for experienced racers and newcomers alike. Done it before? Time for another run. Never raced? Take the challenge and jump in. Registration is open now, with over 50 paddlers already signed up. Pre-registration is $35 per paddler through May 15 at form jotform.com/240255158509053, or $40 on race day. New this year — an earlier start time. Registration will be open from 8 am to 10 am, with the race starting promptly at 10:30 am. Registration closes at 10 am sharp, so plan to arrive early. After the race, stick around for a dockside celebration with awards and a BBQ. All registered paddlers will receive a hamburger or hot dog lunch, and food will be available for purchase for spectators. All proceeds benefit Wolfeboro Lions Club Charitable Fund, supporting local programs and community needs. In this one-day workshop, students will start by making a silver ring band out of wire or sheet metal. The bezel will then be soldered to the ring, a cabochon stone will be set, and the finished ring will be polished and ready for you to wear and enjoy. Materials are not required, but students can bring in a favorite stone or any silver they may have. The instructor will supply silver wire and sheet metal, plus cabochon stones of assorted sizes for students to purchase. The estimated cost of materials ranges from $40 to $90, depending on the cost of materials you use. Tuition is $75.00 per student. Materials fee is between $40-$90 depending on the stones and amount of silver the student uses. The materials fee will be paid cash or check to the instructor on the day of class. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Those who wish to take the class MUST sign up by Wednesday, May 13th. Join a Science Center naturalist for a special Bald Eagle Adventure to view these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. The cruise will focus on the recovery of Bald Eagles as a nesting species in the state of New Hampshire with particular discussion of the Bald Eagles on Squam Lake. All Squam Lake Cruises are 90 minutes in length. Squam Lake Cruises are on canopied pontoon boats. Binoculars are available for wildlife viewing at no additional cost. New Hampshire state law requires any youth age 12 and under must wear a life jacket on board a boat. Not recommended for ages 5 and under. Binoculars will be available free of charge or you may bring your own. Dress appropriately for the weather and remember that it is cooler on the lake. Be prepared for rain. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your cruise departure time. If we need to cancel your cruise due to weather we will contact you to reschedule or issue you a full refund. If you need to cancel for any reason please call us at 603-968-7194 x7 at least 90 minutes prior to the start of the cruise to reschedule or receive a refund.

In this class, students will learn the basics of fused glass to create their own spring cherry blossom panel. New England may not be known for its early Spring, but this class will bring the joy of the season’s new colors in a forever fused glass piece. Verne will begin with a brief lesson on the elements used in fused glass as an art form, then students will use professional tools provided by Verne to create a colorful blooming scene. A favorite place, a photo, and/or just color and line will inspire your art. The students’ panels will be fired in a kiln off-site after the class, and will be returned to the gallery for pickup when complete. Students are asked to bring along a photo of cherry blossoms or their favorite flower to serve as an inspiration for their piece. Tuition is $55 per student with an additional materials fee of $15 paid by cash or check to the instructor at the time of the class. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. This special mixed media workshop invites you to slow down, turn inward, and create in harmony with the energy of the new moon, a sacred time for stillness, release, and fresh intention. Through the creative process, participants will explore what is being shed, what is being held gently in the heart, and what is just beginning to emerge.
