The average person in the U.S. creates nearly five pounds of waste per day, and only about 32% of it is recycled or composted. That adds up to almost 300 million tons of trash each year. What if some of that “waste” could become art? Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Wednesday, April 8th for a drop in workshop on upcycling. We will hold this event from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the SLA barn building. Here we’ll transform everyday discarded materials into imaginative sculptures, mosaics, and characters. Using bottle caps, aluminum cans, plastic lids, old electronics, and other recycled materials, participants will reimagine trash as treasure. Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) AmeriCorps member, Macie Kane, will lead the program. This program is for everyone and anyone who wants to create. There are no rules when it comes to art, especially art made from trash. So bring a thinking cap, some creative juices, and possibly a Pinterest board, and come join our crafting party! All materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring clean recyclables from home to incorporate into their designs. Come ready to experiment, collaborate, and leave with a one-of-a-kind piece of art and a fresh perspective on what we throw away. Try out the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire’s Junior Science class with this special one-class sampler! Interested families and returning scientists can try out Junior Science and see if it is a good fit before signing up for our next 4-week class (starting in April). Junior Scientists (ages 3.5–5 years old) will enjoy a story and a fun science experiment related to each month’s theme. Grown-ups are welcome to stay in the building during class time, and families with siblings may opt to play on the second floor during the class time—please note that the museum is closed to the public on Mondays. Pre-registration is required. STEAM programs at the Museum are sponsored in part by Novocure, Albany Engineered Composites, Granite State Development Corp. and Service Credit Union. Is it possible to fit an entire breathing world inside a simple glass jar? Join the Squam Lakes Association for a hands-on program where we’ll explore the "invisible handshake" that allows plants and microbes to thrive in a self-sustaining ecosystem. We’ll walk around the SLA campus to collect the essential "gears" for our engines—from nutrient-rich soil to the "murky" water that jumpstarts the cycle of life. Back inside, you’ll learn the art of layering your biosphere to ensure it can recycle its own air and water for years to come. You’ll head home with your own miniature "Squam in a Jar" and a new perspective on how our massive watershed protects and sustains itself! To keep you comfortable during our outdoor collection walk, please wear clothing and footwear that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. We will provide all necessary supplies, but feel free to bring your own clean, clear glass jar with a tight-fitting lid if you have a favorite one you'd like to use! For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other Adventure Ecology programs throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and take place in trails of all lengths and difficulties throughout the four seasons. The focus is to become more comfortable traversing and exploring our beautiful landscape around Squam while socializing with the community. The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. Franklin VNA & Hospice will present Golden View's free April Lunch and Learn program "Education and Support Tips for Caregivers" on Thursday, April 16th, from 12-1 p.m. in the Woodland Community Room located in Golden View's Retreat building.   A caregiver includes anyone who assists others in need, such as family members, healthcare staff, or friends of loved ones in need.
