Official Status: While popular culture calls it “Presidents’ Day,” the official federal holiday name remains “Washington’s Birthday,” designated as such in 1885.Origin: The holiday was established to honor the first president, George Washington, following his death in 1799, and became a federal holiday in 1879.Uniform Monday Holiday Act: In 1971, this act shifted the holiday from February 22 to the third Monday in February to create a three-day weekend for federal workers.Lincoln’s Influence: Because Abraham Lincoln was also born in February (Feb. 12), the holiday is frequently associated with him, particularly as a combined celebration of all U.S. presidents.Traditions & Closures: Government offices, banks, the U.S. Postal Service and Audubon Public Library are closed on this day.
