Topic - Battle of Van Nest's Mill Location  - Wyckoff-Garretson House, 215 S Middlebush Rd, Somerset, NJ 08873, USA This is not a presenter/audience-type event - it is a casual, friendly, unstructured meetup for folks who enjoy discussing various historic topics.  The subject matter is decided by YOU.  A book, an artifact, an idea, a movie, a myth or legend, a personal experience - whatever you wish to talk about is fair game.  Have you always wanted to know about a particular place or event?  Ask the other people in attendance, they might know!  No need to dress up, bring something to eat or drink if you like, come late or leave early - it's all good!  There is no age limit, but minors must be accompanied by an adult.   On a frozen morning in January 1777, the "Forage War" came to the banks of the Millstone River. Join us as we recount the daring Battle of Van Nest's Mill (the Battle of Millstone). Discover how General Philemon Dickinson led 450 local militia through waist-deep, ice-choked waters to surprise a superior British foraging party. Learn how this "local interest" skirmish caught the eye of George Washington himself and proved the New Jersey militia was a force to be reckoned with.

Club Meadows is hosted by The Meadows Foundation and is open to our current Friends.  We also welcome anyone who is a member of ANY historic organization in Franklin Township (Somerset County), NJ.  Not a member?  No problem!  Just come to a meetup and you can join The Meadows when you arrive (annual fee is from $10-$20/year).

The Meadows Foundation announces the opening of the Wyckoff-Garretson Museum House and Carriage Barn, every second Sunday of the month starting in April and going through October.  There will be docents on hand to conduct tours and answer questions about colonial life. ......More

The Meadows Foundation announces the opening of the Wyckoff-Garretson Museum House and Carriage Barn, every second Sunday of the month starting in April and going through October.  There will be docents on hand to conduct tours and answer questions about colonial life.  The recently renovated carriage barn features a used book and gift shop.  The historic home is filled with artifacts and period furniture, clothing and other items.     In addition, talks and craft demonstrations will periodically be conducted in the conference room, and videos about life in colonial times will be shown in the media room.  The buildings will be open from 1pm-4pm, April through October.  This is a FREE EVENT, so bring family and friends and enjoy an interesting afternoon with us! You are invited to the birthday bash for Gordon "Big G" Pastrami, to be held at the speakeasy Hageman's Hideout!  Come sing Happy Birthday to the famed rum runner, enjoy some birthday cake and 1920s mocktails (including Big G's famous "bathtub gin"), and listen to jazz that's just the bee's knees while you flap your gums with other gents and gals.  Spoiler alert:  someone's going to take the big sleep, and the hatchetman (or hatchetwoman) will be one of the guests.  So RSVP now to make sure you get to come to the keenest shindig in town by following this link:  https://ticketstripe.com/HagemansHideoutThis fundraiser for the Meadows Foundation will be held on Sunday, April 12 from 2-5 pm at the Hageman House, 209 South Middlebush Road, Somerset, NJ.  Prior to the event, you will receive via email information about your character, costume suggestions and some 1920s lingo you can sling at the bash.  During the event you will be given lines and information to share, and you will look for clues to help determine who is the killer - and it might be YOU!  There will be 1920s-era noshings and mocktails (no actual alcohol) and of course birthday cake.  The attendance fee is $35, and Friends of the Meadows will receive a $5 discount to be refunded upon their arrival.  When you purchase your ticket, you may choose a specific role - but tickets are VERY limited, so get yours now!  Please note that advance ticket purchase is required, and sales end April 10 at 11 pm.  There are also "party crasher" tickets for those who want to attend but not assume a specific role.If you have any questions, please feel free to email Sue Ann at [email protected].  Hope to see you soon!
