The 44th annual Fire Muster and Firefighters’ Family Day, presented by the Glasstown Antique Fire Brigade, will take place at Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center on Sunday, August 17, 2025 from 10 am to 4 pm. Explore over 80 antique fire trucks from the Mid-Atlantic States on display through the WheatonArts campus. This year, the fire truck used during the episode Peyton’s Places: The Santa Game will be out for presentation! The truck featured in the segment is a very rare 1961 Ward LaFrance Firebrand model. The FireBrand was introduced in 1960 and manufactured for just under 3 years by Ward LaFrance, located in Elmira Heights, New York. With only 109 Firebrands manufactured, few are known to remain in running condition. This truck and its sister truck are part of Glasstown Antique Fire Brigade member John Burzichelli’s Ward LaFrance collection. Visitors will be able to take pictures as they climb aboard the fire truck and stand in the same spot as Peyton Manning did during the episode. Fire Muster is FREE and open to the public, part of WheatonArts Family Days, presented in part by PNC Arts Alive. All WheatonArts exhibitions and artist demonstrations are free for the day as well.

It is excited to announce its upcoming Community Back-to-School Outreach, dedicated to blessing children in need with backpacks and essential school supplies for the new school year.   It is calling on local businesses, organizations, and individuals to partner with it by donating new book bags, notebooks, pencils, crayons, glue sticks, and other school supplies. Your generosity will help equip students from low-income families and set them up for a successful academic year.   Donations are being accepted through August 25, 2025, at Vineland Spanish Pentecostal Church A/G, 512 S. 3rd Street, Vineland, NJ.   Join CU Maurice River for What It’s Like to Be a Summer Gull, an engaging birding program led by CU Naturalist Jim Blumenstein. Gulls are often dismissed as noisy beachgoers or parking lot scavengers, but these adaptable birds are far more complex—and perfectly suited to life along our dynamic coastal habitats. This program invites both new and experienced birders to take a closer look at the behavior, ecology, and identification of the gull species that spend their summers in southern New Jersey. Through thoughtful observation and guided discussion, participants will explore how gulls forage, communicate, raise young, and thrive in human-influenced landscapes. Come sharpen your birding skills and gain a new appreciation for these intelligent and resourceful seabirds. Those attending may want to bring note-taking supplies. As the talk runs through usual dinner hours, participants are invited to bring a snack to share.

Join CU Maurice River for August's CU Social Series as we learn about paleobiology, the field of science that combines paleontology and biology to study past life on earth. Dr. Camilla Alves Souto, an Assistant Professor of Marine Science at Stockton University, will be presenting on the evolution of marine invertebrates. She specializes in the study of the echinoderms - sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and sea stars. Hailing from Brazil, Dr. Alves Souto has her undergraduate degree in Biology and an MS in Zoology from the University of Bahia. She received her PhD in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. As a researcher she studies specimens in museum collections around the world and studies live organisms in various marine ecosystems worldwide. Her projects are driven by her curiosity and interest in understanding the processes that have shaped the evolution of marine life over millions of years, i.e. how did animals survive extinctions, how and where they live, and how they are managing to stay alive in today's world. This integrative approach, where Marine Biology and Paleontology intersect, allows her to study broad-scale animal evolution in deep time. Join CU Maurice River for a special edition of Family-Friendly Friday—a hands-on evening of scientific exploration as part of the Dragonfly Mercury Project! This nationally recognized study enlists community scientists across the country to collect dragonfly larvae, which are used to monitor mercury levels in ecosystems.  Kids and adults alike will have the chance to wade into local waters, collect dragonfly larvae, and learn how these aquatic insects help us track mercury pollution. While dragonfly sampling is always open to all ages, this evening prioritizes family involvement—so bring your curiosity, your water shoes, and your sense of adventure. It’s a great way to connect with nature, contribute to real environmental research, and make lasting memories outdoors. Quick-dry synthetic clothing and water shoes (not sandals) need to be worn; expect to get wet. Wading in the water up to your knees, or higher, is likely. Life jackets will be required at all times while in the water. However, there are also important jobs for a few community scientists who might feel more comfortable on land. Insect repellent and sunscreen are highly recommended for this outing as well as an ample amount of drinking water. CU Maurice River has a limited number of life jackets for participants to borrow so if you have your own, please bring it with you.

If you attended the "What It's Like To Be A  Summer Gull" class August 19,  take your learning into the field with a guided walk led by CU Naturalist Jim Blumenstein, focused on observing summer gulls in their natural habitats. As you explore local coastal areas, you'll look and listen for gull behavior—feeding, calling, nesting, and interacting—while gaining insight into the ecological roles these birds play along the Bayshore. Dress weather-appropriately and don't forget your binoculars! Bringing drinking water and a snack is encouraged. Use of sunscreen and insect repellent is suggested.

THE WORLD FAMOUS GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA ® In The Mood for the Glenn Miller Orchestra: The first Glenn Miller Orchestra did not make it at all. It was a total and absolute economic failure. But Glenn knew what he wanted, held to that dedication and relentlessly worked to succeed. He launched his second band – the one that lives on today – in March of 1938. The Glenn Miller Orchestra has been a “hit” ever since. The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all dance bandleaders back in the Swing Era of the 1930s and 40s.  A matchless string of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts and the drawing power at theatres, hotels and dance pavilions, built and sustained the momentum of popularity. Glenn disbanded his musical organization in 1942 at the height of its popularity to volunteer for the Army. There, he organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band . It went to Europe to entertain servicemen performing numerous live and radio shows. On December 15, 1944, Major Miller took off in a single engine plane from Europe to precede his band to France, disappearing over the English Channel, never to be seen again. The army declared him officially dead a year later. With the release of the major motion picture, The Glenn Miller Story, featuring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson in 1954, interest and popular demand led the Miller Estate to authorize the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra. On June 6, 1956, and under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance, the reformed Glenn Miller Orchestra performed its first concert and has been on the road ever since. Other leaders have followed Ray including clarinetists Buddy DeFranco and Peanuts Hucko, trombonists Buddy Morrow, Jimmy Henderson, Larry O’Brien and Gary Tole, and tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart. Since January 2012, vocalist Nick Hilscher leads the band. Today, the 18 member ensemble continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements both from the civilian band and the AAFB libraries. Additionally, it also plays some more modern selections arranged and performed in the Miller style and sound. Just as it was in Glenn’s day, the Glenn Miller Orchestra today is still the most sought after Big Band in the world. Runtime: ~120min., including intermission
