Enjoy a full day of birding, paddling, and community at CU Maurice River’s Big Day celebration. The morning begins at 7 am with a Dawn Song bird walk along Hansey Creek Road, guided by past and present World Series of Birding team members. This early spring stroll moves through a variety of habitats alive with migrating warblers and other seasonal highlights, offering excellent opportunities to observe and learn from experienced birders.   At 9:30 am., it's time to go to the water for the Hansey Creek Paddle, exploring the quiet back creeks of the Delaware Bay. Bring your kayak or canoe and lifejacket for an up-close look at shorebirds, wading birds, osprey, and perhaps even river otters along these productive marshes within the greater Maurice River watershed.   The day concludes at 4 pm with the Ah Why Knot Awards celebration, hosted at the home of CU Board President Jane Galetto. This annual gathering honors dedicated volunteers and members of the Shorebird Recovery Team with great food, live music, and camaraderie around the fire. Whether you come for one activity or the entire day, Big Day is a meaningful way to celebrate nature and the community that works to protect Down Jersey’s remarkable landscapes. Enjoy an engaging and informative program on flies and mosquitoes presented by Michael Hoban of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.  This session will explore the complex lives of these often-misunderstood insects, highlighting their life cycles, behaviors, and ecological roles. While mosquitoes and flies are frequently viewed only as pests, many species serve as pollinators, decomposers, and vital food sources within the food web. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how these insects fit into healthy ecosystems and how science informs management practices.   Following the presentation, take part in a hands-on garden bioblitz where you will observe, identify, and document insects found on site. This interactive experience offers an opportunity to apply what you have learned while contributing to community science efforts and building a greater appreciation for the biodiversity thriving just outside our doors. Participants may wish to bring note-taking supplies. We will spend time in the garden during this class. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Take a fish survey training session in preparation for 2026 fieldwork as part of the Manumuskin Restoration Project. Participants will learn the standard operating procedures used in the surveys, including safe sampling techniques, fish-handling protocols, and species identification methods. There will be a review on  how data are collected and recorded, and there will be practice identifying fish samples in the field. This hands-on training is an excellent opportunity to support active restoration efforts while gaining valuable field experience.   Please note that this training is mandatory for anyone who plans to assist with fish surveying this year. All participants must provide their own kayak or canoe and life jacket. Be prepared for a day on the water. Dress appropriately for the weather; hats and sunscreen are suggested. All participants are required to provide their own kayaks or canoes and PFDs. Insect repellent is also recommended.

Join CU Maurice River for the Frog Slog, an evening of exploration and hands-on discovery in the vernal pools of southern New Jersey. CU Naturalist and retired educator Tony Klock, alongside AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador Mazie Mulford, will guide participants through vernal pools in search of calling frogs and other seasonal wildlife. Learn to identify local frog species by their distinctive breeding calls and discover the diverse macroinvertebrates that thrive in these temporary pools, playing a vital role in the food web.   Participants will gain insight into amphibian life cycles, habitat needs, and the importance of protecting wetland ecosystems, with opportunities to gently catch, observe, and release frogs for identification. Designed to engage families and nature enthusiasts of all ages, this immersive experience encourages curiosity, stewardship, and a deeper appreciation for the region’s freshwater habitats. Come prepared for wet and muddy conditions, bring your sense of adventure, and expect to fully embrace the messy side of learning in nature. This is a night excursion in wet areas so please come prepared to get messy! Waterproof boots, a change of clothes, and a headlamp are recommended. For some, bedtime will need to be postponed, but this event is well worth staying up late. Bring water for hydration and a snack for little ones who get hungry quickly.
