Join CU Maurice River at the Neighborhood Wildlife Garden in downtown Millville on Saturday, May 10,  to maintain the local community and wildlife. They'll be removing last year's stems and new weeds, doing some general spring cleaning, and possibly transplanting some of the new growth into other areas of the garden.   Pocket gardens such as this one are becoming increasingly popular as the urgent need to assist diminishing populations of pollinators is recognized. In cities, green spaces filled with native plants offer food sources for butterflies, bees, birds, and more.  This garden features coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens), a favorite of the ruby-throated hummingbird, and butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), a type of milkweed used by monarchs to lay their eggs on for the next generation. Studies by Doug Tallamy have shown that even modest increases in the native plant cover in suburban properties significantly increases the number and species of breeding birds. Using native plants in  neighborhoods and corporate landscapes can restore ecosystem function lost due to habitat fragmentation. Wear clothes that are appropriate for gardening activities. Tools will be provided,  but if you have a favorite gardening implement, please bring it. Water will be available,  but provide a reusable bottle to cut down on waste. Insect repellent is recommended.

The Downe Township Horseshoe Crab Festival is a celebration of the Delaware Bayshore's natural and cultural values. It will take place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, in Fortescue, 11 am-4 pm. Multiple outdoor sites along Fortescue’s beautiful bayshore will be open to visitors, offering live music, educational activities and exhibits, artists, craftsmen, eco-tours, food vendors, wildlife and environmental lectures, and more. The festival is in honor of the annual natural phenomenon of horseshoe crab spawning, which brings thousands of horseshoe crabs to New Jersey’s Delaware Bayshore. Downe Township is a certified horseshoe crab sanctuary. The inaugural festival was held in 2014 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the sanctuary designation. Festival attendees will have the opportunity to learn about how they can help horseshoe crabs and why their population's success is vital to the red knot, a shorebird species whose population is in a sharp decline.  CU Ambassadors are crucial in helping spread CU Maurice River's mission to the broader community. Volunteers can also help foster the next generation of Down Jersey stewards by assisting in educational activities for younger festival-goers as well as the young at heart.

The contest is open to middle school students in Atlantic County, grades 6-8. The schools involved will collect all artwork submissions from students and Atlantic Prevention Resources will organize a pick-up of all student works. All submissions must be received by April 7, 2025. The top three winners will be awarded a gift card, and the first place artwork will be displayed on a billboard in the local community. Featured student artwork from talented middle school students will be shown in an art exhibit at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University from April 30 to May 11, celebrating how positive actions and mindsets can lead to a fulfilling, substance-free life. Each year, the Fish Hawks stay rooted in New Jersey’s Bayshore region for the event—an area renowned for its incredible biodiversity. Join CU Maurice River at the next Membership Meeting on Wednesday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. to learn about upcoming opportunities to get involved and out-of-doors. This gathering is public and will be held at John Boggs Hall in Port Elizabeth. Afterward, stay on for a presentation by Ray Hinkle on wetland restoration projects. Ray is the Senior Technical Director of Ecosystem Restoration at AKRF, a consulting firm, working with CU Maurice River on the Manumuskin River restoration project. This upcoming project, funded by a grant from Restore America's Estuaries, will remove about 50 acres of invasive Phragmites australis, all located on privately owned land along the Wild and Scenic Manumuskin River. This project is possible due to the support by the riverfront property owners. Ray has supported the PSEG Estuary Enhancement Program since 1993 by providing a wide array of services related to tidal wetland restorations at various sites along the Delaware Bay.

Join CU Maurice River for a day of birding, paddling, and community at CU Maurice River's Big Day celebration! Start your morning with a peaceful Dawn Song bird walk along Hansey Creek Road. Led by past and present World Series of Birding members, this guided stroll begins at 7 am  and takes you through diverse habitats perfect for spotting migrating warblers and a variety of other avian species.  At 9:30 a.m., there will be the Hansey Creek Paddle, where you can explore the serene back creeks of Delaware Bay, lined with shorebirds and wetland wildlife. Bring your kayak or canoe and life jacket to this unique experience, where you’ll get up-close views of otters, osprey, herons, and more! Don’t forget your binoculars to catch sight of all the incredible birds and animals along the way. The area, part of the greater Maurice River watershed, offers some of the most pristine and biodiverse ecosystems in the region. The day wraps up with the Ah Why Knot Awards celebration at 4 pm.  This event, reserved for CU Maurice River members, honors dedicated volunteers and environmental stewards. and celebrates the efforts of the Shorebird Recovery Team and those who help protect Down Jersey’s natural beauty.  Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather as all events will be out-of-doors.
