Please join us for a special tour dedicated to the history of the many women who ran the Phelps Mansion. This tour will cover the women who originally lived and worked in the house from 1871-1882 — including women of the house Sarah Ireland Phelps and Hattie S. Phelps, Irish servants like Cora Leal and Margaret Jordan, and the cook and freedwoman Etta Davis — as well as the early members of the Monday Afternoon Club who later purchased the home in 1904. The tour will conclude with a discussion about the current digitization of Monday Afternoon Club records happening in partnership with Binghamton University. Guests will get an opportunity to explore these primary documents and learn about the process of preserving them for future generations. This tour will include all floors of the mansion. Please note the basement and third floor are only accessible by way of the servants’ staircases. These stairs are narrow and harder to navigate. About your guide for this program: Chelsea Gibson has a PhD in US history and specializes in the late 19th century and women’s history. She regularly oversees student internships at the Phelps, where some of this research originated. Investigating Legends, Myths, and Mysteries  Is there anyone who doesn’t like a good story? We all have family stories that have passed down through the generations. They were typically based on a grain of truth that, over years of repetition, evolved to add interest and keep the story alive.   Similarly, a town’s legends, myths, and mysteries are retold to a broader audience in an effort to differentiate and promote the community. If you enjoy puzzles, you’ll love the rewarding adventure of becoming a “history detective” as you discover whether the story is correct, merely conjecture, or false.   Join me for an in-depth look at several of Vestal’s legends to determine their validity. About our presenter: Margaret Hadsell is the Town of Vestal APHNYS Registered Historian since 2006. HistoryForge: Crowdsourcing Local HistoryAre you interested in local history and want to help preserve it? Come learn about HistoryForge, a community-sourced digital mapping project hosted by Binghamton University. Community volunteers transcribe census records on the website, which in turn get plotted onto an interactive, digital map. We have started with the 1910 census and have transcribed over 10,000 census records. We’re currently working on Binghamton’s Third Ward, though we hope in the future to incorporate Johnson City, Endicott, and other towns in Broome County. Our free transcription sessions are a great place to meet like-minded history enthusiasts, and food and drinks are provided. Anyone can learn how to do this as long as you have a computer, an internet connection, and the ability to read cursive (or an interest in learning how to do so!).Please make sure to bring your laptop with you to this event.If you have any questions reach out to the Project Coordinator, Mary Tuttle: [email protected] is FREE – no registration necessary.
