Binghamton University Opera Workshop presents a preview of Dominick Argento’s Postcard from Morocco. In this poetic and quietly surreal opera, travelers in a railway station reveal their inner lives through postcards they never send. With its blend of wit, memory, and longing, the music offers an intimate glimpse into each character’s world. Join us for this special preview at the Phelps Mansion and Museum on Friday, February 6 at 7:00 pm, and catch the full opera performances on Friday, February 20 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, February 22 at 3:00 pm at the Binghamton University Anderson Center Chamber Hall. Step back in time and discover the fascinating stories of Binghamton’s Monday Afternoon Club in this engaging talk for all ages. Mondays at the Mansion: Stories from the Monday Afternoon Club explores the lives, interests, and influence of the women who gathered each week to learn, discuss ideas, and build community. Using artifacts and items from the collection, this program brings history to life—showcasing the objects these women used, treasured, and preserved. From books and personal belongings to materials connected to their meetings and activities, each piece helps tell the story of how the club shaped social and cultural life in Binghamton. Presidents from New York: A Presidents Day Weekend Workshop for Kids Celebrate Presidents Day Weekend by discovering how New York State helped shape the presidency! In this fun, interactive workshop, young participants will learn about three U.S. Presidents with New York connections (FDR, Theodore Roosevelt, and Martin Van Buren) and explore what their lives were like beyond the White House. Through stories, hands-on activities, and age-appropriate discussion, kids will discover how these presidents grew up, what challenges they faced, and how New York influenced their paths to leadership. Along the way, participants will think about qualities like responsibility, curiosity, and perseverance—and how anyone can be a leader in their own community. This workshop is designed to be educational, engaging, making it a perfect way for families to enjoy Presidents Day Weekend together. This workshop is open to children ages 5-10 years old. Space is limited to 10 children. HistoryForge: Crowdsourcing Local HistoryAre you interested in local history and want to help preserve it? Come learn about HistoryForge, a community-sourced digital mapping project hosted by Binghamton University. Community volunteers transcribe census records on the website, which in turn get plotted onto an interactive, digital map. We have started with the 1910 census and have transcribed over 10,000 census records. We’re currently working on Binghamton’s Third Ward, though we hope in the future to incorporate Johnson City, Endicott, and other towns in Broome County. Our free transcription sessions are a great place to meet like-minded history enthusiasts, and food and drinks are provided. Anyone can learn how to do this as long as you have a computer, an internet connection, and the ability to read cursive (or an interest in learning how to do so!).Please make sure to bring your laptop with you to this event.If you have any questions reach out to the Project Coordinator, Mary Tuttle: [email protected] is FREE – no registration necessary.
