It is our nearest star and our planet’s powerhouse, the source of the energy that drives our winds, our weather and all life. The passage of the Sun’s fiery disc across the sky — day by day, month by month — was the only way to keep track of time for countless past civilizations. Don’t be fooled by the terminology although it is a typical dwarf star, the Sun consumes 600 million tons of hydrogen each second and is 500 times as massive as all the planets combined. On a two year journey to Mars astronauts will face extraordinary challenges—long distance, a closed environment, isolation, altered gravity, radiation. What will it take to get astronauts to Mars—and back—safely? This new, animated planetarium production highlights NASA research and training initiatives that are preparing the next generation of astronauts who will head to Mars. The Bell Museum collaborated with NASA and the University of North Carolina Morehead Planetarium and Science Center to create this planetarium show. In a feast of colour and sound, Mayan Archaeoastronomy: Observers of the Universe takes the audience on a tour of six Mayan temples, San Gervasio, Chichen Itzá, Uxmal, Edzná, Palenque and Bonampak. Dive into a Mayan world of knowledge and learn about the importance of the orientation of the temples in relation to the movement of celestial bodies like the Sun, the Moon and Venus. Mayan Archaeoastronomy: Observers of the Universe is the first movie for full dome viewing, completely animated and made in Mexico. It is narrated in four languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese. The film was financed by the National Council of Science and Technology of Mexico, and produced by Frutos Digitales with the support of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
