On a two year journey to Mars astronauts will face extraordinary challenges—long distance, a closed environment, isolation, altered gravity, radiation. What will it take to get astronauts to Mars—and back—safely? This new, animated planetarium production highlights NASA research and training initiatives that are preparing the next generation of astronauts who will head to Mars. The Bell Museum collaborated with NASA and the University of North Carolina Morehead Planetarium and Science Center to create this planetarium show. Runtime: 21 minutes Did you know that over 2,000 years ago ancient astronomers knew the Earth was round, measured its diameter and distance from the sun, created an accurate star map with magnitudes, knew the length of the year to the precision of our modern calendar, and developed a method for predicting eclipses? Sailors navigated by the stars and some astronomers thought that the Earth orbited the Sun. Amazing Astronomers of Antiquity is a journey of discovery from the Pantheon to the Library of Alexandria, the streets of Leptis Magna, a special statue in Naples, a ship on the Mediterranean and a pyramid in Egypt. All reflect the wisdom of ancient astronomers.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore color, pattern, and composition using decorative Japanese paper tape to create unique designs. You’ll learn easy techniques for layering, pattern-building, and creative placement that can be used to personalize journals, cards, art projects, and everyday items. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced maker, this workshop invites you to experiment, relax, and let your creativity flow. By the end of the session, each participant will design and complete their own original washi tape artwork on canvas to take home. $40 per person. Members get $5 off this workshop. Not a member?
