SLCCHC March Brown Bag Presentation: A Loss Before the Win: The 1915 Woman Suffrage Campaign in STLC Join us for our March Brown Bag Presentation with Dr. Gaylynn Welch! In 1915, suffragists in New York failed to convince the (male) voters of the state to enfranchise women. Although the 1915 referendum was defeated, the 1915 campaign was an important step to the New York State suffrage amendment victory in 1917. In this presentation, Dr. Gaylynn Welch focuses on suffrage mobilization in St. Lawrence County. Women and men mobilized by forming associations, meeting, speaking, advertising at summer fairs, and driving from town to town to promote the cause. Dr. Welch also explores the relationship between the state leaders who sparked the campaign and the local suffragists who sustained it. About Dr. Gaylynn Welch: Dr. Gaylynn Welch is a lecturer in the History Department at SUNY-Potsdam and teaches a summer course for SUNY-Canton. Her research focuses on relationships between local suffragists and leaders of national suffrage organizations. Her New York History Journal article, “Suffrage at the School House Door: The New York State School Suffrage Campaign and Changing Strategies and Rationales for Women’s Votes,” focuses on the neglected partial suffrage laws that are important but often neglected by historians. Currently, Dr. Welch has been researching the early twentieth-century suffrage movement in St. Lawrence and Franklin counties.

St. Lawrence University Writers Series presents poets Lillian Yvonne Bertram, Santee Frazier, and Kirsten Kaschock The 2025-26 St. Lawrence University Writers Series is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Viebranz Visiting Professor of Creative Writing. Since 1999, this distinguished position has brought nationally recognized writers to campus to inspire, teach, and connect with our literary community. Natural Egg Dyeing Workshop  Join Director Carlene Bermann & artist Sara Lynch to learn techniques for dyeing Easter eggs with vegetables, plants, and spices. You will also learn how to create intricate patterns on your eggs using old silk clothing and foraged materials, like leaves and flowers. Dye your own eggs on-site, or decorate pre-dyed eggs. To color eggs, you can choose from a variety of natural materials, such as coffee, turmeric, cabbage, and foraged plants. We will also be using vintage silk scraps to transfer dye onto eggs for a unique look. Recommended for Ages 4+. Spaces are limited. Pre-registration recommended. All materials will be provided at the workshop.

The longest continuously held half marathon in St. Lawrence County. The Maple Run celebrates the end of winter, contributes to economic development in the community, and supports local youth running programs. Packet Pickup The Maple Run has gone bagless! Race-Day Details: Half Marathon Start 8:30 AM,  5K Start 9:15 Am Start/ Finish line at the Bend in the River Park picnic shelter Placement Awards 11:00/11:15 AM Door Prize Drawing 11:00/11:15 AM Stay for snacks and drinks 10:45 AM to 12:30 PM Parking is available in the Canton Pavilion lot and along Lincoln Street Distances Half marathon: 13.1 miles, 8:30 AM start 5K-ish: around 3.1 miles, 9:15 AM start In-Person, Virtual, or Hybrid The Maple Run welcomes runners at all levels of development and fitness, so there are many ways to participate. Runners can graduate from the 5K to the half-marathon, or sample the half-marathon virtually this year, on their own or with a group of running buddies, to prepare for next year. Participants can also try a bit of both with the hybrid half-marathon option. Half-marathon and 5K distances are offered in both in-person and virtual formats. The half-marathon is only available as a hybrid event. A hybrid participant may finish 10 miles of the half-marathon on a course of their choosing, indoors or out, anytime before the 5K start on April 18. The final 3.1 miles are completed at the Maple Run event on Saturday, April 18. Low-Cost Youth Registration Participants aged 8 to 17 on the day of the Maple Run may select a low-cost youth 5K or half-marathon entry. Half-marathon youth participants are not eligible for age-group and overall placement awards All youth registrants will receive a shirt and finisher's medallion included in their entry fee Walk or Run The half-marathon route will remain open for four hours, so speedy walkers and runner/walkers have time to finish. Dedicated walkers are encouraged to try the virtual or hybrid option to test their mettle on the half-marathon course or opt for the in-person 5K. The Maple Run start times for the in-person half marathon and 5K are staggered, so finish times closely coordinate between the two distances. Wheelchair Athletes The in-person half-marathon course is fully on road, with two steeper hills, and open to traffic. Wheelchair athletes, special needs strollers, and certified service animals are welcome on the course. The Maple Run Half-Marathon Course The scenic out-and-back half-marathon course offers well-stocked refreshment stations along the route, staffed by the North Country's best volunteers. 5K Course 5K(ish) participants travel an on- and off-road course through the Village of Canton and the well-maintained trail system of the St. Lawrence University campus. Shirts, Medals, Age-Group Recognition, and Placement Prizes All registrants for all distances will receive a long-sleeve shirt included in the cost of their entry. All in-person and hybrid participants will receive an iconic Maple Run wooden finisher's medallion. The top three placements in each half-marathon age group will receive a special edition Maple Run keychain. Overall 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place prizes will be awarded to in-person half-marathon participants in men's, women's, and non-binary categories. No placement prizes or age-group awards will be offered to 5K participants. Spectators! Watch runners get a start, take on the course, or cross the finish line. There is plenty of room at the combined start/finish line for spectators. For folk who wish to grace their athlete with the finisher's medal, arrangements can be made with the volunteers at the finish line. The half-marathon route is open to traffic, making it easy to reach the halfway point and water stations. Spectators are encouraged to bring signs, ring cow bells, and take pictures! Jazz Concert  The Institute for Learning Centered Education (ILCE), an autism advocacy organization, is partnering with the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce to present its Second Annual Jazz Benefit Concert. The benefit concert will feature the popular local quintet, The Five Dots, who play jazz standards, original compositions, and unique takes on R&B and popular songs. The lineup includes Hailey Hodge (vocals), John Danis (electric wind instrument and vocals), the Rev. James Galasinski (bass), Ben Richey (drums), and Tim Savage (piano). The fundraising event will help the institute to continue to provide vital services and public resources to support individuals on the autism spectrum.

10th Annual Earth Day 7K Trail Run/Walk Nature Up North is excited to invite you to join them for the 10th Annual Earth Day 7K Trail Run & Walk. One of the few annual trail races in the North Country, this race's proceeds benefit local conservation and environmental education initiatives. Walkers can start at 10:00 am, with runners starting at 10:30 am at the Wachtmeister Field Station. Runners' times will be recorded and available after the event. The flat, 7-kilometer (approximately 4.4 miles) course connects the Kip and Saddlemire Trails at St. Lawrence University, passing through scenic forests and wetlands along the Little River. The flat terrain makes this course suitable for runners and walkers of all fitness levels. The course will be well-marked, with volunteers at all major intersections. Short road segments connect the longer stretches of trail. Be prepared for a few muddy sections! Join us after the race for awards, a prize raffle, and refreshments! In the past, we’ve had t-shirts as well, but to keep with the spirit of Earth Day, we decided to limit the potential for waste this year. Instead, try to create your own “Earth Day Ensemble” of clothing for the race to show off your unique style! The race fee is $25 for general admittance and $15 for students. Youth 12 and under are free. All proceeds for this event will benefit local conservation and environmental education projects in the North Country. To register, follow this link!
