250th Celebration: ADK History - Author Talk w/ Marty Podskoch Celebrate the 250th Birthday of the US with a medley of Adirondack History books by Marty Podskoch. Join us for an afternoon with award-winning author and historian Marty Podskoch as he takes us on a journey through the rugged beauty and rich history of the Adirondack Mountains. Marty will be presenting a "medley" of his six popular Adirondack works and sharing stories of the people, places, and legends that define the North Country. In 2013, the Adirondack Mountain Club presented Podskoch with the “Arthur E. Newkirk ADK Education Award” for achievement in chronicling the social history and lore of the Catskills and Adirondack Fire Towers and the Adirondack Civilian Conservation Corps Camps. His two best-selling Adirondack fire tower books on the 57 towers in the Southern & Northern Districts tell the history of the towers, the observers who staffed them, their families, and the forest rangers who supervised them. Marty Podskoch spent many years traveling throughout the Adirondacks giving talks and tracking down these interesting observers who spent years watching for smoke and calling rangers to extinguish the fires. It is a must-read for those who love to climb fire tower summits and wonder about the towers’ history. Podskoch’s Adirondack Civilian Conservation Corps Camps records the accomplishments of the CCC Camps in the Adirondacks, other parts of New York State, and Camps out West. His two-volume Adirondack Stories: Historical Sketches contains 151 illustrated panels of Adirondack guides, hunters, hermits, hotels, writers, artists, photographers, explorers, lumbering, mining, tanneries, railroads, boats, sports, entertainers, and amusement parks. Podskoch’s Adirondack 102 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring the Adirondacks has been the #1 Adirondack travel book for the past 10 years. A local writer in each Adirondack town wrote a short history and Marty included interesting places to visit. It is also a passport book. The reader is encouraged to meet a town resident or business person and have them sign or stamp the book. Those who visit all 102 towns receive the “Vagabond Award” patch, so named after the self-described “Vagabonds": Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone & John Burroughs, who took automobile camping trips throughout the Adirondacks. About the Author: Marty Podskoch is a renowned author and historian known for his extensive research into the Catskills, Adirondack fire towers and in his CCC Adirondack, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont books. He also wrote travel books in the Adirondacks, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. He is a former reading teacher in Delhi, NY and who now lives in Easton, CT.

These hands-on sessions are designed to help residents navigate the rewarding journey of tracing their family history. Beginning this spring, Sheldon will guide participants through the essential steps of building a family tree, from mastering census records to breaking through "brick walls" in their research. Every other week we meet at the Little River boat launch on outer Park St. at 6:30 for a paddle on the Little and Grasse Rivers with a lesson on nature we see along the way! Life jackets, paddles, and boats are all provided for free. This paddle is themed around the different birds we hope to see along the Little River! You are encouraged to bring binoculars, towels, and clothes you don't mind getting wet. We'll start with some boat safety and equipment, cover common bird calls we expect to hear, then set out to see how many different species we can find! Abolitionists & the Underground Railroad The Ogdensburg History Museum will host a public presentation by Town of DeKalb Historian Bryan Thompson on the deep, radical history of the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad in St. Lawrence County. The event will take place on Sunday, June 14, at 1:00 PM at the museum, located at 206 Ford Street. The lecture is free and open to the public. Thompson, an expert on regional history, will present his original research through a comprehensive timeline spanning nearly a century. The lecture will detail how early settlers brought enslaved people to clear local lands in 1802, the rise of religious radicalism like "Comeouterism," and the county's ultimate transformation into a vital corridor for freedom seekers escaping to Canada after the British Empire abolished slavery in 1834. "Our local history is deeply intertwined with the national struggle for human rights," said [Insert Name/Title of Museum Spokesperson]. "Bryan Thompson’s research highlights the brave local ministers, voters, and political figures who pushed back against oppressive laws, risking their livelihoods to create a safe haven in the North Country." Key historical milestones highlighted in the presentation include: The Power of the Pulpit: The influence of revivalists like the Rev. Charles Finney, who introduced "Comeouterism"—the belief that good Christians must completely separate from anyone supporting slavery—and Black ministers like the Rev. Charles Bowles, who organized strongly abolitionist churches in Hopkinton. Political Rebellion: The rise of the anti-slavery Liberty and Free Soil parties in local towns like Bucks Bridge and Canton, culminating in North Country Congressman Preston King’s historic break from the Democratic Party to join the newly formed Republican Party. A Media War: The history of regional abolitionist newspapers, including The Laborer in Gouverneur and the founding of the St. Lawrence Plaindealer as an anti-slavery campaign tool. The Freedom Trail: The first documented account of a freedom seeker escaping through St. Lawrence County, published in The Colored American in 1837. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how St. Lawrence County evolved into a region where 75% of voters backed the anti-slavery presidential candidate by 1856. This event will be a wonderful celebration of the work that GardenShare has done and a look ahead to the next 30 years. 🌳 Hosted at the beautiful grounds of St. Lawrence Nurseries, the Farm Gala will begin at 5:30pm with dinner being served at 6:30pm. 🍽️ A gourmet dinner will be catered by Big Spoon Kitchen, featuring locally produced ingredients. 🍷 Each admission will receive one drink ticket (vendor will be announced soon!) with additional tickets available for purchase. ✨ Each admission will receive one raffle ticket for the prize of their choice.
