Sunday, August 27 is the annual (and free) Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival with expert shorebirders at the East Pond helping to spot and ID shorebirds, shorebird presentations and children's activities at Visitors Center, and more.NO RSVP or reservations needed.  Informal meet up field trip.  Check this calendar if weather uncertain and we'll post any cancellation two hours before the meet up time.Some of us from Saw Mill River Audubon will be meeting 8:00 am in front of the Visitors Center to bird the West Pond, eat some early lunch and then cross over to bird the East Pond.  You are welcome to meet up with us!  See Google map link and address above in event heading.Bring binoculars or email [email protected] to let us know you want to borrow them for this event.  We have one or more spotting scopes to share and so will the shorebirders at East Pond. Gear advice: Bring water, hat and sunshade -- it can be very hot and intense sun.  And insect repellent.  Long, lightweight pants better than shorts. We may be walking through mud at East Pond so have waterproof boots to wear there or shoes/sandals that can get covered in mud. Bring a mid-morning snack/lunch, no food at venue but there are restooms and water fountains inside the Visitors Center.

Our volunteer gardeners will be working in our Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden and Native Meadow Demo Garden this morning. You are welcome to stop by just to watch and visit and/or to join in the work. To get garden work day notices, add your name to our garden volunteer list here: Native Plant Gardening – Saw Mill River Audubon Hello Fellow Gardeners, After a long, chilly winter it is time again to be in the native gardens at the Saw Mill River Audubon Pruyn Sanctuary in Chappaqua. The address is 275 Millwood Road (Route 133) in Chappaqua. The surroundings couldn't be nicer as each spring and summer we are lucky to gather in the gardens as birds and butterflies greet us.  I hope that you are able to join us this year as we continue to create a healthy and nutritious environment for the birds and insects and a delightful garden for humans too! As many of you who helped in the garden last year know, 99% of the gardening is weeding, vigilant weeding throughout the year and by August or so there seemed to be little weeds to find.  Mid-summer is when we switch to also include tasks like staking and deadheading...but still weeding.  "Many hands make light work" and the labor is not that difficult and it seemed that last year's time was spend enjoying the day and chatting as we gardened.   We'll meet every other Wednesday until August when we start "easing up" to every three weeks. In the early part of the season 10AM is our start time because it is warmer, later when it warms up in July or August we'll switch to the cooler start time of 9AM. No experience is required.  Bring a sun hat and gloves if you have them, we will provide the tools/collecting pots.  You don't have to commit to all days, schedule conflicts do come up as do vacations, that's no problem.  But I would hope that you'd want to join for whatever days is possible for you.  We only work for about an hour, maybe 30 minutes more, but if you have to leave earlier that is no problem.   Wednesday April 30, 10AM Wednesday May 14, 10AM Wednesday May 28, 10AM Wednesday June 11, 10AM Wednesday June 25, 10AM Wednesday July 9, 10AM (or 9AM if it is warm by then) Wednesday July 23, 9AM (thereafter, every 3 weeks)  Wednesday August 13, 9AM Wednesday September 3  Wednesday September 24 (possibly, but frankly unlikely) If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail or call me.  I'm looking forward to seeing you this Wednesday.
