Join the staff of Schoharie Crossing and play The Immigrants’ Empire Board Game (Jr. Edition).Players ages 8-12 will learn about the travel routes, cities, and jobs in 19th century New York State as they leave NYC and compete to reach Buffalo at the terminus of the Erie Canal. The Immigrants’ Empire board game for Juniors tasks children with putting themselves in the shoes of an immigrant. They’ll need to collect food, clothing, jobs and personal items in the form of game cards that have monetary value. Every move requires players to use money to buy passage via steamship, canal barge, stagecoach or railroad. If they choose to stay put they’ll still need to shell out money for room and board. As players learn about early travel in NYS, they’ll be exposed to centers of commerce and jobs available circa 1850. When players advance to a new town and draw a destiny card, they’ll encounter a host of uncertain outcomes and similar challenges facing immigrants during the height of mass migration. Will they be uplifted with a charitable donation from a benefactor or beset with illness and injury? Play to find out!
