The Tompkins Chamber is proud to host a DEI: Brave Space session, "Words Matter: The Power of Inclusive Language" presented by Debra Howell.  Our everyday language often includes a multitude of common phrases and terms rooted in less savory aspects of history, perpetuating stereotypes, or inadvertently leading to feelings of exclusion. Frequently, we recognize the inappropriateness of certain expressions yet grapple with finding suitable alternatives. This interactive session is designed to delve into the nuances of inclusive language. We will discuss the principles of respectful communication and also provide practical guidance on addressing situations where language might be unintentionally offensive. Our choice of words has the power to either foster unity or create distance. By mastering the art of inclusive language, we can enhance team collaboration and drive greater efficiency in our collective endeavors.  Learning Objectives: Define inclusive language and explain its significance in promoting equality and respect in diverse settings. Acquire practical skills to use language that is respectful and inclusive of all people, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ability, age, and other identities. Apply inclusive language principles in different scenarios, such as workplace communication and personal interactions. Learn strategies to effectively and constructively address instances of non-inclusive language when encountered. Debra Howell As the Director of Information Technology Operations at Cornell University Library, Debra brings over 20 years of valuable expertise in driving strategic direction across all facets of information technology. With a flair for creativity and dynamism, Debra excels in leading and facilitating intricate workplace and technology processes while nurturing internal talent and fostering effective collaboration for optimal computing environments. She boasts a rich background in facilitation, organizational change and development, team building, and leadership. Debra obtained her Masters of Industrial and Labor Relations degree from Cornell University in 2006 and holds certifications as an XCC Executive Coach, Project Management Professional (PMP, 2008), and an Office of the Secretary of Defense Master Trainer and Master Resiliency Trainer. She serves as the Vice President Programming for the Rochester PMI Chapter. In her personal life, Debra is owner and producer of Burlesque Buffet. Join us in celebrating the 25-year anniversary of the Community Foundation of Tompkins County at this special Business After Hours! We are excited to join our host, the GIAC Rec Center (GRC), in celebrating all the wonderful work the Community Foundation has done over the last 25 years. The Community Foundation was established in 2000 with a mission to bring people and resources together to build a more equitable Tompkins County by inspiring diverse philanthropy, catalyzing collaborations and championing inclusion and justice. Since its establishment, they have distributed nearly $33 million in over 7,500 grants to projects and programs, including support in building the GRC.  This event offers our members a special opportunity to share ideas and build connections. Held at various locations in Tompkins County, this gathering is the perfect place to form long-lasting partnerships. There will be a lovely spread of light refreshments and door prizes. Special prizes from the Community Foundation this month include one $250 grant certificate and one $100 grant certificate. Winners will consult with Community Foundation staff to choose which Tompkins County serving mission driven organization they would like their grant certificate awarded to. Bring your business cards for an opportunity to network - we will have raffle tickets for the door prizes! Join us for Unity in Shades Roundtable! This Roundtable aims to cultivate an environment where professionals of color can forge significant relationships, engage in discussions pertinent to our experiences in both business and non-profit sectors, and enhance the visibility of multicultural individuals in Tompkins County. Our Roundtables serve as peer affinity groups, providing a confidential setting for sharing insights, seeking advice, and obtaining mentorship. Join us for this session in the Education Suite at Family & Children's Services. F&CS provides a wide range of services that include mental health care to children, adults, families, and seniors, EAP services to more than 50 local businesses, targeted outreach to vulnerable youth and other community members in need of support, and community education to professionals and the general public. Come hungry, refreshments will be available! This roundtable is specifically designed for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian individuals. While we encourage support and promotion from allies, participation is reserved for those who share this identity.
