His first book, Little and Often: A Memoir, hit #1 on the Amazon Books Best Seller list and was named a USA Today Best Book of the Year in 2021. His second book, Evergreen: The Trees That Shaped America, was longlisted for the 2026 PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. Preszler grew up on a cattle ranch in South Dakota and attended a one-room schoolhouse on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. After college at Iowa State University, he served as a White House intern for President Bill Clinton. He holds an MS in agricultural economics and a PhD in horticultural biology from Cornell University. A former winemaker and wooden boatbuilder, Preszler’s life was profiled in a documentary that won a New York Emmy Award in 2017. Explore the hidden layers of architectural history at Planting Fields on this special walking tour that uncovers the traces of structures, landscapes, and eras that have shaped the estate over time, led by Planting Fields Foundation’s Director of Collections and Research, Marie Penny! A palimpsest refers to the layers of history embedded within a place, where remnants of the past continue to influence the present. Throughout its history, Planting Fields has been home to remarkable buildings that have since disappeared—from the Byrne House, which stood on the property before the Coe family, to the mid-century SUNY-era geodesic domes. Though these structures are no longer part of the landscape, their stories remain woven into the identity of the site. This fascinating tour invites guests to uncover the architectural evolution of Planting Fields through historic photographs, archival materials, and the physical landscape itself. Discover how the estate has transformed across generations and how each era has left its mark. As part of this exclusive experience, guests will receive an advance preview of Fragment of the Foundation of the Babel Tower, the 2026 Catalyst installation by Fiona Tan, before its public opening. Inspired by the myth of the Tower of Babel and the tradition of the garden folly, Tan has imagined the remnant foundations of a tower within the landscape of Planting Fields – a structure that appears both in the process of being created and, at the same time, in ruins. The tour concludes with a special opportunity to visit the Planting Fields Foundation archives, where historic documents, photographs, and collections provide an even deeper look into the people, places, and stories that have shaped the estate. This tour takes place primarily outdoors and requires a moderate amount of walking. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable footwear. About Long Island Chamber Music Long Island Chamber Music (LICM) is a collective of professional musicians that bring classical music to Long Island communities through concerts and educational programs year-round. LICM was founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife musicians Eric Huckins and Gergana Haralampieva alongside composer Nick DiBerardino with the mission of making professional classical music of the highest caliber accessible to Long Island audiences. LICM performs chamber music at local venues across Long Island including concert halls, parks, libraries, churches, museums, and community centers. LICM works closely with its community partners to create concert programs that are relevant and compelling to audiences. Each concert showcases a variety of instrumentations drawing from LICM’s artist roster of over 20 professional musicians. LICM is strongly committed to programming works and featuring musicians from historically underrepresented communities in the classical music field. LICM provides a variety of highly interactive educational concerts and residencies in schools, libraries, and community centers that focus on fostering a love and understanding of classical music for all ages. LICM musicians are all drawn from Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect, the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Astral Artists, Concert Artist Guild and several other of the country’s most prominent musical institutions.
