Wings 2 Roots is led the Centre Island (CI) Bird Sanctuary and is a three-part nature series for young explorers, set on the beautiful grounds at Planting Fields. Each session blends hands-on classroom activities with guided nature walks, connecting kids to the birds, plants, and ecosystems right in their own backyard. Along the way, naturalists will uncover what birds truly need to thrive, explore the forces that threaten their habitats, and discover the real ways they can make a difference. Series Schedule June 24 | What Makes a Home? Whats does a bird actually need to survive? Join the CI Bird Sanctuary for a hands-on morning of outdoor discovery where young naturalists become citizen scientists as they explore the essentials of a healthy bird habitat through wildlife observation and interactive learning. We’ll meet some of Long Island’s most beloved feathered residents in the Education Center, then head outside to explore the bird sanctuary feeders and search for signs of what birds need to thrive. Along the way, participants will start their own field journal to document observations, sketches, and discoveries — because great scientists write things down! Register Now! July 8 | When Habitats Get HurtNot all dangers to birds come with wings and claws. Join the CI Bird Sanctuary for a hands-on morning of outdoor discovery where young naturalists become citizen scientists as they investigate two surprising threats to bird habitats: invasive plants that crowd out the species birds depend on and invisible pollutants that quietly impact the food and water birds rely on. Together, we’ll explore Planting Fields to spot these threats up close, compare habitats side by side, and add observations and discoveries to our field journals. Join the CI Bird Sanctuary for a hands-on morning of outdoor discovery where young naturalists become citizen scientists and habitat stewards as they celebrate everything they’ve learned and turn knowledge into action. Together, we’ll hear inspiring stories of birds that returned from the brink because people chose to protect them, then head outside for a special Gratitude Walk through the Planting Fields to revisit favorite spots and observe how this landscape supports the birds that call it home. Along the way, participants will make their own Habitat Hero Pledge, take home a native plant seedling, and earn an official Junior Habitat Steward certificate to celebrate their conservation journey. Led by Director of Collections and Research, Marie Penny, this tour explores W.R.’s enduring passion for American history and identity, from his collecting practices to his philanthropic work in Wyoming and the founding of the American Studies at Yale program, shaping a legacy rooted in the spirit of the nation. Inside the Main House, guests will encounter striking interpretations of the American West, including the Breakfast Room, home to the famed “Buffalo” Mural by Robert Winthrop Chanler (depicting American bison), along with a brief interpretive presentation. Bursting with hands-on learning, creativity, and fun, this camp is designed to spark a lifelong love of the natural world. Campers will explore the wonders of nature through crafts, outdoor adventures, engineering challenges, and environmental stewardship activities. As Junior Rangers, they’ll gain new knowledge about plants, animals, insects, and trees while discovering the importance of caring for the world around them. Adventures await at every corner of Planting Fields, from the historic Laundry Building and scenic woodland trails to the enchanting greenhouses and stunning Olmsted Brothers-designed landscapes. Through these hands-on explorations, campers will grow as curious explorers, problem-solvers, and budding stewards of the environment, building confidence, friendships, and a sense of wonder that will last long after camp ends. They’ll go on mini adventures through the gardens and woodlands, explore nature, and create projects that connect them to the plants and animals around them. Coe was a passionate supporter of ornithology and believed deeply in preserving knowledge and discovery for future generations, ultimately donating his renowned ornithological collection to Yale University. Inspired by this legacy, you step into a landscape still shaped by that sense of curiosity — where birds continue to make Planting Fields their home! The experience begins with a guided owl pellet dissection, uncovering hidden clues within and revealing the intricate relationships between predators, prey, and the ecosystems they inhabit. Part detective work, part science, this hands-on exploration offers a rare window into how naturalists and researchers piece together the stories of the natural world. From there, the focus expands to the remarkable adaptations that allow birds to survive and thrive — from specialized beaks and feathers to hunting strategies, flight patterns, and unexpected behaviors. You’ll also explore the many species that can be found throughout Planting Fields and how they move through the landscape across the changing seasons. Along the way, you’ll learn how to identify common birds and recognize the subtle signs and sounds that reveal wildlife all around you, carrying those observations beyond the day into your own backyard and local green spaces. The journey continues on a guided walk through the grounds to the Wedell Garden and Costich Bird Sanctuary, home to Planting Fields Foundation’s inaugural Catalyst exhibition, The Great Bird Blind Debate by Mark Dion and David Brooks. As you move through the landscape, you’ll search for birds and traces of wildlife, experiencing the estate from a shifting perspective.
