This four-class program invites young artists to explore a variety of creative techniques while celebrating nature and self-expression. Each session introduces a new medium and theme, inspiring children to experiment, imagine, and bring their artistic visions to life. Every participant will have the chance to display their creations in a gallery at our upcoming Great Nature Play Day! Class Schedule – Attend one session or all four!Aug. 3: Self-Portraits (Oil Pastel)Discover the rich history of portrait making! We’ll explore real portraits inside our historic museum and mansion before creating colorful oil pastel self-portraits that celebrate identity and imagination. Register for this Class Aug. 5: Nature Collages (Mixed Media)Design your very own landscapes with natural treasures and recycled materials! Using leaves, textures, and shapes, children will build layered collages inspired by the world around them. Children will create their own sketch journals, learning to look closely at flowers and other natural details, then capturing them with drawings and watercolor. Inspired by this legacy, you step into a landscape still shaped by that sense of curiosity — where birds continue to make Planting Fields their home! The experience begins with a guided owl pellet dissection, uncovering hidden clues within and revealing the intricate relationships between predators, prey, and the ecosystems they inhabit. Part detective work, part science, this hands-on exploration offers a rare window into how naturalists and researchers piece together the stories of the natural world. From there, the focus expands to the remarkable adaptations that allow birds to survive and thrive – from specialized beaks and feathers to hunting strategies, flight patterns, and unexpected behaviors. You’ll also explore the many species that can be found throughout Planting Fields and how they move through the landscape across the changing seasons. Along the way, you’ll learn how to identify common birds and recognize the subtle signs and sounds that reveal wildlife all around you, carrying those observations beyond the day into your own backyard and local green spaces. The journey continues on a guided walk through the grounds to the Wedell Garden and Costich Bird Sanctuary, home to Planting Fields Foundation’s inaugural Catalyst exhibition, The Great Bird Blind Debate by Mark Dion and David Brooks. As you move through the landscape, you’ll search for birds and traces of wildlife, experiencing the estate from a shifting perspective. The walk culminates with a rare opportunity to step inside The Posh Blind — an immersive installation that is often closed to the public. Blending science, history, exploration, and outdoor discovery, this experience offers a unique opportunity to connect with both the natural world and the enduring legacy of curiosity at Planting Fields. His first book, Little and Often: A Memoir, hit #1 on the Amazon Books Best Seller list and was named a USA Today Best Book of the Year in 2021. His second book, Evergreen: The Trees That Shaped America, was longlisted for the 2026 PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. Preszler grew up on a cattle ranch in South Dakota and attended a one-room schoolhouse on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. After college at Iowa State University, he served as a White House intern for President Bill Clinton. He holds an MS in agricultural economics and a PhD in horticultural biology from Cornell University. A former winemaker and wooden boatbuilder, Preszler’s life was profiled in a documentary that won a New York Emmy Award in 2017. Explore the hidden layers of architectural history at Planting Fields on this special walking tour that uncovers the traces of structures, landscapes, and eras that have shaped the estate over time, led by Planting Fields Foundation’s Director of Collections and Research, Marie Penny! A palimpsest refers to the layers of history embedded within a place, where remnants of the past continue to influence the present. Throughout its history, Planting Fields has been home to remarkable buildings that have since disappeared—from the Byrne House, which stood on the property before the Coe family, to the mid-century SUNY-era geodesic domes. Though these structures are no longer part of the landscape, their stories remain woven into the identity of the site. This fascinating tour invites guests to uncover the architectural evolution of Planting Fields through historic photographs, archival materials, and the physical landscape itself. Discover how the estate has transformed across generations and how each era has left its mark. As part of this exclusive experience, guests will receive an advance preview of Fragment of the Foundation of the Babel Tower, the 2026 Catalyst installation by Fiona Tan, before its public opening. The installation offers a timely reflection on memory, fragments, and the ways we preserve and reconstruct our understanding of the past. The tour concludes with a special opportunity to visit the Planting Fields Foundation archives, where historic documents, photographs, and collections provide an even deeper look into the people, places, and stories that have shaped the estate. This tour takes place primarily outdoors and requires a moderate amount of walking. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable footwear. More about First FridaysThis monthly series dives into the various themes that make up Planting Fields, with exclusive behind-the-scenes walking tours and workshops led by Planting Fields Foundation and New York State Parks staff, who are experts in their respective fields. From wellness and Olmsted landscape features to the life-stories of Coe family members and their unchallenged spectacular horticultural, historic and personal collections, participants of this series will see this site with a new lens. Each month a new theme is explored with at least one staff expert serving as your guide. This series will take place on the first Friday of each month.
