Grades 5-12.  Color and create fun bookmarks that will be displayed and given out to children who visit the Family Center.  All registered participants are asked to pick up a craft kit, in the Family Center, containing three bookmark templates.  Markers, crayons, or colored pencils will be needed for this program.  All completed bookmarks will need to be returned to the Family Center.  Each registered participant will earn two hours of community service credit for returning the completed bookmarks. Registration is no longer required for this program.

Grades 5-12.  Tweens and teens will have the opportunity to make cards, both holiday and all season, for children and teens receiving treatment in hospitals. Please read the card making guidelines below before you begin. The supplies needed will include white drawing paper or construction paper, markers, crayons, and/or colored pencils.  Completed cards are to be dropped off to Mrs. Greco in the Family Center.  When dropping off your completed work, please let the Family Center staff member know your first and last name so that you can receive the correct community service credit.  However, only include your first name on the card itself.  Please do not mail the cards directly.  The library will be mailing out batches of cards as needed.  Each card will earn the participant 1 hour of community service credit, with a maximum of 5 hours per month.  Please take your time and create cards that you are proud to give to someone else.  Click here for the card making guidelines.

Grades 5-12.  Tweens and teens will have the opportunity to assist the guests of the Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN) in Hempstead through our new travel size toiletry program. Each participant who brings in a minimum of 3, new and unopened travel size personal hygiene products in a Ziploc style plastic bag, will earn 1 hour of community service credit.  Items include, but are not limited to, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, and lotion.  Participants may donate items purchased at a store or those collected from hotel stays while traveling.  All donations should be brought to Mrs. Greco in the Family Center.

Grades 5-12.  Turn cans and bottles into community service hours by returning deposit bottles to a local supermarket.  Simply return the cans and bottles and then email a photo of the bottle return receipt to [email protected].  Participants will earn 1 hour of community service credit for every 20 cans and bottles that are returned, up to 2 hours per month.

Ages 3 and up with accompanying adult. The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant. Tickets will be given to Plainview-Old Bethpage school residents beginning Sunday, March 15 at the Family Center. Limit 4 tickets per family. Photo I.D. or Library Card required. If there are extra tickets, they will be given out in person on Sunday, March 22 on a first come, first served basis. No children under three years of age and no strollers please. No food and beverages permitted. Plainview-Old Bethpage school district residents without tickets will be admitted followed by non-residents on the day of the program, space permitting.
