Join us in Meeting Room South for a ukulele jam session with others who love to sing and play music. Please bring your tuned-up uke, extra copies of any music you wish to share, and a fervent desire to have fun with other ukulele players. Hawaiian shirts optional!All levels of skill are welcome, but knowledge of basic chords is necessary. No formal instruction will be provided, but our regular ukulele players love to help out beginners! Spring is in full bloom - and so is the work of the New York Botanical Garden! Join Kristine Paulus, Head of Acquisitions and Technical Services for the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at NYBG, for a fascinating look behind the scenes at what it is like to curate one of the premier collections of botanical literature in the world. Ms. Paulus will discuss how the Mertz Library collections support the work of the New York Botanical Garden, including scientific research, horticultural displays, public exhibitions, botanical artists, inquiries from home gardeners, and much more. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the presentation.About the presenterKristine Paulus is Head of Acquisitions & Technical Services at the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at the New York Botanical Garden, where she has worked since 2013. She has a certificate in horticulture from NYBG’s Continuing Education program and a Master of Library Science from Pratt Institute. We'll be joined by educator Vincent Tolentino for an introduction to the museum's history and holdings in celebration of the museum's reopening. Together we will take a look at what has changed after many months of renovations, and we will explore key works in the collection, benefiting from high resolution photographs. We’ll review what factors students should consider in deciding whether or not to submit their standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) for test-optional colleges and universities. We’ll also discuss the different ways that students can be admitted to a particular school.We’ll examine the holistic admissions review process, what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission.We will also discuss the importance of community service, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and an opportunity to showcase a student’s character. Stop back in Meeting Room North South around 12:30 pm for some cool drinks and to take a break while showing off your new creations!Basic materials such as paper, pens, and pencils will be available if you need extras.
