Economist María Alejandra Vélez studies environmental governance and both licit and illicit extractive economies. Amazon specialist Rodrigo Botero focuses on one of the world’s most biodiverse and climatically critical regions, now deeply threatened by deforestation, mining, cattle ranching, and drug trafficking. This conversation examines the environmental impact of the war on drugs and its connection to extractive models in the rainforest, exploring how these dynamics affect ecosystems, local communities, and the emotional ties to the land. Esta región se está viendo profundamente amenazada: talas masivas, explotación minera, ganadería y tráfico de drogas. About the exhibition: Entre la Coca y el Oro is an exhibition by Tatiana Arocha that weaves art and community together to reclaim the narrative surrounding the coca plant. The exhibition explores coca’s cultural, spiritual, social, and ecological significance while pushing back against colonial and extractivist perspectives. Arocha’s work foregrounds ancestral knowledge, environmental justice, and Indigenous resistance, offering a space for collective reflection, education, and artistic exploration. You smash them, then Snug Harbor turns them into compost for community green spaces across Staten Island. While you’re here, groove to the DJ, check out arts and crafts, tour the Heritage Farm, learn about composting, and more!
