The NYC Department of Education’s Borough Arts Festival – Staten Island is proud to return to Snug Harbor to showcase artwork created by students in grades Pre-K through 12 from District 31 and District 75. This exhibition is part of a series of borough-wide events where students present the visual and performing arts projects they’ve worked on throughout the school year in galleries, theaters, museums, and public spaces across the city. A choreographed set of scenes, MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY (work-in-progress) is a movement collage probing the act of “cleaning” at the sites of: the female body, the Asian diasporic experience, and our atmosphere. In this early draft of the work, elements of sound, costume, character, and dance create MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY as a whimsical, make-believe game that celebrates the American “bathtime” as both an act and an experience. Created by Grace Yi-Li Tong with collaborators Rachel Ha-Eun Lee, Hiroka Mori Nagai, and Colby Lamson-Gordon. Artists live and work in one of our historic cottages, with studio space available for the creation, development and presentation of new work. At the end of each residency, artists share their work in a public work-in-progress performance across the campus. PASS provides time, space, financial and curatorial support to incubate artists in the development of their work. PASS is a unique, sought-after opportunity for performing artists living, creating, and presenting new work in New York City. Snug Harbor is proud of its role as an arts incubator and cultural anchor for Staten Island. Join us for pre-performance refreshments beginning at 1 PM. The performance starts at 2 PM and will be followed by a brief Q & A with the artists. About Grace Tong Grace Yi-Li Tong (she/her) is a playful Chinese-American movement artist crafting physical collages. Influenced by make-believe games, clowning, paper collage, puppetry, and contemporary dance theater, she ridiculously cuts-and-pastes “regular” events onstage to decontextualize bodily and social identity, fairytale, and comedy. As a choreographer based in New York, she has recently shown work at The Center for Ballet Arts, Flushing Town Hall, Triskelion Arts, Mark Morris Dance Center, Arts on Site, Laguardia Performing Arts Center and more. Her film credits also include choreographic collaborations with brands Tod’s Shoes and Yayi Chen. Grace holds a BFA in Dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and currently performs with The Metropolitan Opera. She also frequently collaborates as a freelance, and has recently been in process with choreographers such as: Patricia Hoffbauer, Beth Gill, Luis A., and more. PASS: Performing Arts Salon Saturdays residency program is made possible through generous lead support from the Howard Gilman Foundation, with additional support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, the Samuel I. Composed by Philippe Treuille and Vaubel, the work draws inspiration from the architectural motifs of the Newhouse Center at Snug Harbor and Herman Melville’s epic seafaring story Moby Dick. The world premiere of ICCC is staged at the Newhouse Center at Snug Harbor in Staten Island, a landmarked former dormitory building dating back to 1833, when Snug Harbor served as a pioneering rest home for sailors. The choreography by Melanie Aceto and her choreo lab ensemble will incorporate a rope-like material that references the significance, strength, and language of ropes aboard a 19th century ship. Vocal and instrumental performers from a consortium of ensembles including Brooklyn Youth Choir Bass Ensemble, Grace Chorale, Brooklyn Treble Choir, New York Choir Project, and Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra surround the audience, giving viewers a 360-degree immersive experience amid an authentic, historic, unforgettable maritime setting. Founded in 2016 by Stanzi Vaubel, PhD, The Indeterminacy Festival is committed to creating exceptional opportunities for lifelong artists. IF invites an intergenerational ensemble of over one hundred community and professional artists to collaborate on the development and staging of large-scale works. The Festival is a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, New York State Council on the Arts, with corporate sponsorship from Neuberger Berman Group. IF has been staged by invitation and support by the Governors Island Trust, McGill University, the University at Buffalo, the University at Malta, and Alfred University. Look out for IF’s recording of Fourteen Porches commissioned by the Grace Chorale to be released in 2025.
