Don’t miss this award-winning solo show created and performed by Ingrid Griffith, telling the largely unheard story of Shirley St. Hill Chisholm, a Brooklyn-born politician of immigrant parents, who, in the 20th century, was the first African-American woman to win a seat in Congress and run for President.  The story follows 10-year-old Shirley as she returns to the U.S. after being separated from her parents during the Great Depression. Her years with her grandmother in Barbados deeply shaped her Caribbean heritage, influencing her bearing, speech, and self-expectations. Shirley Chisholm’s childhood reveals how race and gender were meant to limit her, yet she chose to fight for the disenfranchised, overcoming immense barriers to rise in politics. Unbossed and Unbowed dramatizes the Civil Rights era, the unrest of the 1960s, and the patriarchal system she challenged—struggles that still resonate today. Through visuals and music, the play captures the economic, political, and social upheavals from the 1930s to the early 1970s. While all characters bring strong voices, it is Shirley Chisholm’s narrative that delivers the story’s powerful message. This series welcomes families to drop in one Saturday a month to join educators in the studio and participate in a hands-on activity or art project inspired by exhibitions on view. This May, and make your own turtle, as we are joined by the New York Marine Rescue Center, who will be onsite to talk about the marine life here in New York! Using paint pens, pom-poms, and more, create a little reptile friend to bring home. No registration required. Free for members / included with museum admission for not-yet members. This May, engage all the senses through the joy of gardening! Join Fred Ellman, founder and director of OnGrowingMindfulness, in this hands-on workshop. Fred designed children’s gardens and exhibitions for the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and has a certification in Horticultural Therapy from the New York Botanic Garden. He’ll lead activities that connect us to the beauty and restorative power of nature. This program takes place in the LIM Studio. In an outpouring of creativity, Bob Dylan released two iconic albums in a single year—Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited—featuring some of his most legendary songs, including “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Join us for our annual celebration of Bob Dylan, with live performances honoring these groundbreaking albums! The Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council and the Long Island Museum have joined forces to bring films to our community that touch upon a variety of topics. Matter of Mind: My Alzheimer’s, directed by Anna Moot-Levin and Laura Green, is an intimate portrayal of three families confronting the unique challenges of Alzheimer’s and how this progressive neurodegenerative disease transforms roles and relationships. Whether it’s a partner caring for a loved one or an adult child shifting into being their parents’ caregiver, these stories show how families evolve when a loved one is diagnosed. After the film, join Lori Maldavir, Director of Program Outreach Alzheimer’s Association, Long Island Chapter, for a facilitated community conversation about themes from the film, such as the importance of support, maintaining connections, and the evolving changes in roles care partners experience. There will be opportunities to meet staff and gain care partner resources from local organizations that offer care and support for those living with Alzheimer’s Disease. Additionally, LIM Educators will offer a hands-on artmaking project for care partners to create and take respite.  LOCATIONThe Gillespie Room located in the LIM Carriage Museum.
