Presented by:Something extraordinary is coming to Asheville this winter! The North Carolina Arboretum and Explore Asheville are elated to announce the arrival of Trolls: A Field Study. Visiting on their first North American excursion, these twelve interactive troll sculptures will explore the Arboretum, embarking on a curious journey to learn about humankind. Produced by Imagine in collaboration with Danish artist Thomas Dambo, these friendly and fanciful sculptures evoke a sense of wonder and intrigue as they study our small, intricate and inventive ways of life in Western North Carolina. Standing seven to nine feet tall and lovingly described by the artist as “Baby Trolls”, the creatures are crafted from materials like fallen branches, wooden pallets and twigs. Through their observations, the trolls reveal a fresh perspective on what makes us human, sparking curiosity and laughter in visitors of all ages. Admission to Trolls: A Field Study is included in the standard Arboretum parking fee. Advance tickets are not required.

Winter Buds & Bark Tree ID with Lauren Lampley  Thursday, February 5  |  1 – 4 pm  BRN – Core |  BREG – Elective  REGISTER HERE Ever wondered how you can identify a tree without its leaves? All tree species have different patterns of bark and leaf/flower buds that can be used to identify them even in wintertime. In this program, we will look closely at the common trees around the NC Arboretum trails and point out specific characteristics of their buds and bark so you can identify them even without their leaves. This program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. Lauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. She currently works at the NC Arboretum as the Adult Education Coordinator managing all the programming hosted through the Adult Education Department. LET THERE BE LIGHT!!: Mosaic Glass Block Lamp Workshopwith Linda Pannullo Saturday, February 7  |  10 – 4pm REGISTER HERE Bring some light into these short days!! Convert a 7″ Glass Block into a stunning mosaic table lamp. Great class for beginners – you will learn basic mosaic skills using glass nippers, running pliers and glass scorer. The afternoon will be spent covering both sides of the block. Grout if preferred, will be done at home and there will be a link to a grouting demo. Class comes with a complete kit that contains glass block, light for the inside, a rainbow array of cathedral glass cut into 3″ x 1″ pieces, handout, glue, paintbrush, popsicle sticks, grout, glass embellishments and extra glass for practice. All tools will be provided for the class. Linda Pannullo is a local mosaic artist that uses both traditional and contemporary for my art. Her work ranges from the whimsical to fine art, from eclectic materials to the traditional stained glass and 3D sculptures. She loves to teach and currently instructs at the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC, Olive’s Porch, the Purple Crayon and Trackside Studios in Asheville. She is very fond of FUNctional Art and love bringing new folks into the mosaic world. One of her biggest honors is to be the 1st mosaic artist to exhibit at the NC Arboretum and have a permanent mosaic installation, Nature’s Throne there. Beginning Botanywith Alexandra Holland Saturday, February 7  |  1 – 4 pm BRN – Core  |  BREG – Core REGISTER HERE It’s a tough life for a plant: make dinner, create and nurture offspring, fight off predators, deal with the neighbors. In Beginning Botany we’ll explore how plants handle these daily challenges using and modifying only leaves, stems, and roots. We’ll cover the basics of plant structure and function. Alexandra Holland graduated from Duke University and earned her Master’s degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin.  She was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists.  Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and spent many hours working with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  She has taught botany for over a decade and leads nature hikes in Western NC for groups of all ages. The Little CraftyFebruary 7 and February 81:00 to 6:00 PMThis February, a beloved Asheville tradition takes root in a new setting. The North Carolina Arboretum, The Big Crafty, and ArtsAVL partner to offer The Little Crafty, an intimate craft market celebrating regional artists, nature-inspired making, and the creative spirit of Western North Carolina. Taking place Saturday, February 7 and Sunday, February 8, from 1–6 p.m. in the Arboretum’s Auditorium, The Little Crafty will feature a carefully curated group of artists whose work draws inspiration from the natural world — botanicals, landscapes, wildlife, and the handmade traditions of the Blue Ridge. Framed by the Arboretum’s living collections and winter landscapes, The Little Crafty invites visitors to engage with art that grows from nature meeting craftsmanship, and the event is timely for warm Valentine’s Day gift-giving. The weekend’s artists echo the imaginative, nature-forward ethos of the Arboretum’s current exhibition TROLLS: A Field Study by artist Thomas Dambo, creating a dialogue between art, environment, and community. As part of the celebration, Sunday, February 8 will be a free Community Day, with the Arboretum’s parking fee waived to encourage broad community participation.

All materials and supplies will be provided for this class and students will take home their in-progress or finished artwork.   Camille Daunno is a retired Art Teacher with an undergraduate degree in Fine Art with graduate work in Textile Design. She worked in NYC as a designer for 10 years designing Fabric and wallpaper. Camille studied Art in NJ, NYC and Italy and studied Botanical Illustration and Painting at the NY Botanical Gardens with a certified instructor. eBird: An Introductionwith Shane Myers Thursday, February 12  |  10 – 12 pm BRN – Elective REGISTER HERE Are you a birder? Do you want to be? Do you like to maintain careful lists of what birds you’ve seen, when, and where? Do you want to contribute to real science that is used in real-life decisions? Do you want to know what birds are being seen around you or your favorite places? In this class, we’ll look at eBird and Merlin and talk about how to use them to their fullest potential. This program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. Shane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils, insects, and reptiles, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups, Odonata Groups, and various bird groups. Shane currently works for the Adult Education department at the NC Arboretum. Geology of the Blue Ridge Iwith Anton DuMars Friday, February 13  |  12 – 4pm BRN – Core REGISTER HERE This is the first class of a two-part Geology course that explores the geologic history of the Southern Appalachian Mountains with lecture presentations, discussions and self-guided explorations in the field. The course begins with a discussion of the earth’s interior and plate tectonics, progresses to a model for the formation of the southern Appalachians and then describes the surficial processes that generate the current mountain topography. Discussion will also include an overview of geologic processes that affect these mountains today: earthquakes, mass movements and floods. Anton DuMars, a resident of Black Mountain, NC, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial, deltaic, and coastal processes. Naturalist Walk and Talkwith Shane Myers Friday, February 13  |  1 – 3pm BRN –  Elective REGISTER HERE Walk around the Arboretum with our staff naturalists and talk about what we see around us. We might see plants and animals, and evidence of them going about their lives in our backyard. Topics will be based on what we see and experience and whatever questions that come up, so every class has the potential to be quite different. This program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. Shane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils, insects, and reptiles, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups, Odonata Groups, and various bird groups. Shane currently works for the Adult Education department at the NC Arboretum. This time of year we may have migratory songbirds, American Woodcock, and possibly, American Barn Owl!  Meet us there, bring your binoculars, and we will watch and listen to some of our areas coolest birds! Presented by:Something extraordinary is coming to Asheville this winter! The North Carolina Arboretum and Explore Asheville are elated to announce the arrival of Trolls: A Field Study. Visiting on their first North American excursion, these twelve interactive troll sculptures will explore the Arboretum, embarking on a curious journey to learn about humankind. Produced by Imagine in collaboration with Danish artist Thomas Dambo, these friendly and fanciful sculptures evoke a sense of wonder and intrigue as they study our small, intricate and inventive ways of life in Western North Carolina. Standing seven to nine feet tall and lovingly described by the artist as “Baby Trolls”, the creatures are crafted from materials like fallen branches, wooden pallets and twigs. Through their observations, the trolls reveal a fresh perspective on what makes us human, sparking curiosity and laughter in visitors of all ages. Admission to Trolls: A Field Study is included in the standard Arboretum parking fee. Advance tickets are not required.

Bird DayFebruary 14 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.mJoin us for a day celebrating all things birds at the Arboretum! Guests can enjoy demonstrations with wild birds within our gardens and trails, indoor live raptor presentations, guided bird walks, and a bird art market with local artists. February is a great time for birding because the lack of vegetation makes it easier to spot our year-round resident birds! This is in conjunction with the Great Backyard Bird Count, an international effort to encourage people of all ages to report their observations of birds to help scientists learn about their populations. Avian Relationships Around the World with Lauren Lampley  Saturday, February 14  |  10 – 11am  BRN – Elective REGISTER HERE With the thousands of different bird species found throughout all 7 continents, there are hundreds of different ways that different bird species find a suitable mate to pass on their genes to the next generation. Join Lauren in this intriguing lecture class to talk about some of the most extreme courtship and reproduction habits for birds from all over the world. This class will talk about birds from Ostriches to Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise and others in between!   Lauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. Spend some time in the forest deepening your connection to nature and the wisdom of your heart. Quiet your mind and tap into the innate inner knowing that is always available to you. Your guide, Christa Hebal, will lead you on a heart-centered wander through the winter forest, weaving mindfulness, breathwork, forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku) and nature therapy together for a restorative afternoon at the North Carolina Arboretum. We’ll celebrate the experience in community, enjoying a wild-foraged tea ceremony and snacks. Bring an open mind and an open heart. All are welcome. Christa has an adventurous heart, and loves to help others encounter wholeness through embodiment and nature connection practices. She has had a professional bodywork practice for 18 years as a nationally certified Massage Therapist, and is also a practitioner of Ortho-Bionomy®, Usui Reiki Master, Certified Pediatric Massage Therapist, Clinical Aromatherapist, and Certified Traditional Herbalist.
