On Monday, May 5th at 6:30 pm, the Transylvania County Library will host readings by some of the contributing authors of Spinning Toward the Sun: Essays on Writing, Resilience and the Creative Life, a new guidebook curated by Nora Shalaway Carpenter. The book features essays from a diverse group of over 30 nationally-celebrated authors and Western NC powerhouse creatives. It is part craft manual and part life companion, offering both inspiration and hands-on guidance to fellow creatives and anyone dealing with tough times. Every author donated their time and words to Spinning, and 100% of the proceeds from every book will go to the recovery of Hurricane Helene supporting nonprofits Beloved Asheville and World Central Kitchen. Thus, in these particularly tough times, Spinning Toward the Sun also serves as an act of solidarity, an example of how we can still mobilize to help our communities — and each other. Authors Megan Shepherd, David Gill, Lizzie Brooks, and curator Nora Shalaway Carpenter will present readings from the book. Highland Books will be on hand with copies of the book for sale and signing. The event will be held in the Rogow Room. The reading will feature Brevard’s own Megan Shepherd, David MacInnis Gill and Lizzie Brooks. Shepherd, a New York Times bestseller and Carnegie Medal-nominated author, grew up in her family’s independent bookstore in Brevard and is the author of many acclaimed novels for readers of all ages including “The Madman’s Daughter”, “Dog Star” and “Malice House”. Gill is the critically acclaimed author of books for both youth and adults including “Soul Enchilada” and “Black Hole Sun”. Brooks has published in “Beyond Words Literary Magazine” and “Door + Jar Magazine”. Curator Nora Shalaway Carpenter is an award-winning author, writing educator, and audiobook narrator. Her books include “The Edge of Everything”, the anthology “Rural Voices” and her newest novel “Fault Lines”. None of the authors will receive any payment or proceeds from the book thus serving as a reminder that we all have the capacity to help our communities—with our time, our energy, and our creative gifts. “Spinning Toward the Sun” was published by Burlwood Books, an independent press based in Austin, Texas.  The book was released in March 2025 and is available for purchase everywhere, in both print and eBook. More About Early and Emergent Literacy Babies, toddlers, preschoolers, in all stages of development with their parents and caregivers are welcome to our morning of celebration. Children start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During early speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. From birth, babies listen to language patterns in everyday speech, as well as in rhyming, chanting, and singing – all of these play an important part in literacy development. As they develop, children see and interact with print in everyday situations. In everything from books and magazines to grocery lists, whether at home or in preschool, they are (and should be) encountering language in print well before they start elementary school. Parents can see their child’s growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as they begin to recognize words that rhyme, scribble with crayons, point out street signs and symbols, and name some letters of the alphabet. Gradually, children combine what they know about speaking and listening with what they know about print and become ready to learn to read and write. That’s what storytime at the library is all about!

Join us for yoga at the Library!Class starts at 9:30 am, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. Bring a yoga mat or towel and water, and be sure to dress in layers!Clare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional, physical, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness, a grateful mom of two awesome boys, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

For May’s meeting, we’ll cook from Milk Street’s Cook What You Have: Make a Meal Out of Almost Anything by Christopher Kimball.  In this book, 225 recipes begin with the most common ingredients in your kitchen, but they provide more than a lesson in practicality. They teach an improvisational, creative way to cook, so you can stop shopping and start cooking what you have. Registered participants can stop by the library to review the book and choose a recipe to make and share with the other participants. We’ll taste each other’s culinary creations, talk about the cookbooks, share what we learned and swap recipes.

More About Early and Emergent Literacy Babies, toddlers, preschoolers, in all stages of development with their parents and caregivers are welcome to our morning of celebration. Children start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During early speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. From birth, babies listen to language patterns in everyday speech, as well as in rhyming, chanting, and singing – all of these play an important part in literacy development. As they develop, children see and interact with print in everyday situations. In everything from books and magazines to grocery lists, whether at home or in preschool, they are (and should be) encountering language in print well before they start elementary school. Parents can see their child’s growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as they begin to recognize words that rhyme, scribble with crayons, point out street signs and symbols, and name some letters of the alphabet. The Noontime Notions: Science Series will begin at noon in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. Noontime Notions programs feature authors, performers, and presenters providing engaging notions for consideration, enjoyment, and discovery.   The program is made possible by the Friends of the Library and will last approximately 75 minutes. Join presenter David Johnston for this three program series adventure to the stars.  David serves as a Solar System Ambassador for NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as a Science Advisor for the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute, and is co-founder of the AstroBrevard Astronomy Club. He has taught science, engineering, and math in both formal and informal settings for the past 20 years. Although his academic career was in Computer Science, David has been a life-long amateur astronomer. David and his wife, Caroline, have lived in Brevard for almost four years. They have two children, both of whom, for better or worse, are also nerds. May 13th — Astronomy 101: the Universe in 75 Minutes We humans have always been fascinated by the night sky. It’s been our calendar, a collection of signposts that show us the way from point A to point B, and a connect-the-dots canvas for us to draw out our myths. Join David for this (slightly compressed) survey of modern Astronomy. May 20th — Artemis: Earth, Moon, Mars —  Our First Steps Towards Living on Other Worlds In the late 1960s and early 1970s, 12 Americans walked on the Moon. They were the first humans to set foot on another world. Then we stopped going. Now, at long last, we’re going back. Join David as he discusses the Artemis program, NASA’s plan to take humanity back to the Moon, and then on to Mars. May 27th — SETI: the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Are we alone in the Universe? Is life ubiquitous or rare? What about intelligent life? Are there other technological civilizations out there? Join  David as he presents a talk on SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and attempts to explain why we can’t answer any of those questions, but may soon be able to.
