Welcome to Out & About Storytime! Join us for an early literacy celebration! The Library’s Youth Services staff is taking our classic storytime out of the building and into the community with stories, movement, and songs for children five and under along with their parents and caregivers. On the 1st Thursday of September to November and February to April we’ll be at The Family Place – Rosman at 11:00 am. This program is free and open to the public. Children start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During early speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. From birth, babies listen to language patterns in everyday speech, as well as in rhyming, chanting, and singing. All of these play an important part in literacy development. As they develop, children see and interact with print in everyday situations. In everything from books and magazines to grocery lists, whether at home or in preschool, they are (and should be) encountering language in print well before they start elementary school. Parents can see their child’s growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as he or she begins to recognize words that rhyme, to scribble with crayons, to point out street signs and symbols, and to name some letters of the alphabet. Gradually, children combine what they know about speaking and listening with what they know about print and become ready to learn to read and write. That’s what Out & About Storytime is all about. Babies, Toddlers, Preschoolers, in all stages of development are welcome to our morning of celebration.

“Moon Trees: 55 Years of Living History”Thursday, Feb. 56-7 pmRogow Room Program Description: Fifty-five years ago, a group of 500 seeds flew to the moon on Apollo 14. They would be planted during the bicentennial as “moon trees.” These historic trees—including one at the Cradle of Forestry in Pisgah National Forest—stand as a living legacy to the space program and launched a decades-long program to explore growing vegetables in space. Join children’s author and literacy advocate Carolyn Bennett Fraiser to explore the fascinating history behind the moon trees and how they are still impacting history today. Presenter Bio: Carolyn Bennett Fraiser is the author of several nonfiction books for children including Moon Tree: The Story of One Extraordinary Tree, a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection and winner of the SCBWI Crystal Kite Award. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Fraiser spent more than 25 years as a writer, graphic designer, and photographer for international nonprofits, covering little known stories around the globe. She currently lives in Brevard with her husband and serves on the board of directors for Bound for Glory, a literacy and adventure camp in Transylvania County. All Things Appalachia is a monthly program series at the Transylvania County Library exploring the people, natural world, culture, and history of the southern Appalachian region.  Presenters include experts in the fields of history, ecology, outdoor recreation, and more. The programs are on the first Thursday evening of most months at 6:00 pm in the Rogow Room.  Each program lasts approximately one hour. These free programs are supported by the Friends of the Library.

Join us for yoga at the Library!Class starts at 9:30 am, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. Bring a yoga mat or towel and water, and be sure to dress in layers!Clare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional, physical, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness, a grateful mom of two awesome boys, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

Join us for this month’s Cookbook Club!Each month we look at cookbooks, do a little cooking, and meet to talk about our experiences. For February’s meeting, we’ll cook from Tiffy Cooks: 88 Easy Asian Recipes from My Family to Yours by Tiffy Chen. Tiffy Chen started blogging about food and recipes after learning to cook from her mother and grandmother. In her debut cookbook, Tiffy shares memories and recipes shaped by growing up in Taiwan – a country with rich culture, diverse cuisines, and some of the best street food in the world – along with beloved family recipes and unique dishes inspired by here travels across Southeast Asia. Registered participants can stop by the library to review the book and choose a recipe to make and share with the other participants. We’ll taste each other’s culinary creations, talk about the cookbook, share what we learned and swap recipes.

While Cupid is in the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14, the library is also welcoming in the Fire Dragon and Chinese New Year with a special concert performance.  The community is invited to this free concert which will be held at noon in the Rogow Community Room. The trio set to perform are all virtuosos in their craft. “Asian Soundscapes” is directed and composed by virtuoso Chinese pipa player and singer Min Xiao-Fen, joined by Mari Ohta, a sensational Japanese koto player, and Amy Xin Yin, a rising voice in contemporary percussion. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, Min crafts soundscapes where ancient strings echo through modern rhythms, flowing with the harmony of the seasons to weave emotion, balance, and drama into a seamless journey of sound. Together, the trio bridges tradition and innovation, guiding listeners through a landscape where past and present sing as one.   This program is made possible by funding from the Friends of the Transylvania County Library.  Learn more about our Friends here.
