“A Gathering Storm: Carolina Colonies in the Revolutionary Era” Join historian and author Bob Plott as he discusses many relatively unknown reasons for unrest in the Carolina colonies that precipitated the Revolutionary War. Some of these issues began as early as 1761, and involved a host of colorful characters, including among others, British Generals, freed slaves, American frontiersmen and iconic Cherokee warriors and chiefs. Plott, using material from some of his six books and multiple other resources, skillfully weaves this story into an interesting blend of education and entertainment. Bob Plott presenter bio: Bob Plott is a North Carolina native who can trace his family roots in the Old North State back to mid-18th century when his ancestors and their dogs arrived here from Germany. When the Plott family settled in Haywood County, they developed the world-renowned big game hunting dog breed, the Plott Hound, which is the official state dog of North Carolina. Bob Plott continues that family tradition of raising the hounds today. He is also a 2016 winner of the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, and has written six award winning books—all published by the History Press – celebrating the history of the Plott breed and southern mountain culture, along with writing scores of magazine articles. Bob is an avid outdoorsman, an accomplished woodcarver, and has conducted programs across the southeast telling the story of the Plott hound. He is included on the traditional artists directory of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Council (BRNHC), as well as a featured speaker on the NC Humanities Council’s Roads Scholar program. In September 2023, Bob received the Mountain Heritage Individual Award, presented annually by the Western Carolina University Mountain Heritage Center, Mountain at their annual Mountain Heritage Day Festival.

Join us for yoga at the Library!Class starts at 9:30 am, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. Bring a yoga mat or towel and water, and be sure to dress in layers!Clare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional, physical, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness, a grateful mom of two awesome boys, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

Same theme and craft as Tuesday storytime. More About Early and Emergent Literacy Babies, toddlers, preschoolers, in all stages of development with their parents and caregivers are welcome to our morning of celebration. Children start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During early speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. From birth, babies listen to language patterns in everyday speech, as well as in rhyming, chanting, and singing – all of these play an important part in literacy development. As they develop, children see and interact with print in everyday situations. In everything from books and magazines to grocery lists, whether at home or in preschool, they are (and should be) encountering language in print well before they start elementary school. Parents can see their child’s growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as they begin to recognize words that rhyme, scribble with crayons, point out street signs and symbols, and name some letters of the alphabet. Gradually, children combine what they know about speaking and listening with what they know about print and become ready to learn to read and write. That’s what storytime at the library is all about!

The Bookmobile will be at this location and available to the public at this time. Stop by and check out your next read!Carr’s Hill Baptist Church: 2719 Greenville Hwy, Brevard, NC 28712Driving on highways and back country roads from Penrose to Sapphire, we strive to serve all corners of Transylvania County. Bookmobile stops are made at child care centers, senior centers, outlying community centers and post offices. Home bound patrons are also visited upon request. The bookmobile is a public library branch on wheels containing approximately 3600 frequently changed items for both adults and children. Books checked out on the Bookmobile are free. All you need is a library card! Patrons can register for a free library card on the bookmobile with the proper ID. Books checked out from the bookmobile can be returned to the main library.
