Women of the Beachwood Chamber Coffee Hour Hear from Joan Spoerl, M.A.T. of The Literacy Cooperative as the Director of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Addressing Our Literacy Emergency: Fighting Poor Reading Results with Imagination & Motivation Recent research and reports highlight that we are in the midst of a literacy emergency both locally and nationwide. Two out of three children in Ohio are not ready for kindergarten. That number is even more dire in the city of Cleveland with 8 out of 10 not ready. When a child starts behind, they often stay behind and it’s hard to catch up. Nationwide, high school seniors tested at the lowest levels ever in reading in the history of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). There’s been a 40% decline in the number of Americans reading for pleasure between 2003 and 2023. College professors report students who balk at the thought of reading an entire book.      In this presentation, you’ll learn about an important, evidence-based and cost-effective solution already making a difference among youngsters and families in our community. Join us in embracing hope and imagination to reverse these trends.

Women of the Beachwood Chamber Coffee Hour Special Guest Speaker: Ms. Deandra Evans, CEO/Owner (LPCC-S) Topic:  High-Functioning, Still Struggling:  Mental Health for Women Who Lead, Build and Carry it All   Deandra Evans is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervision designation (LPCC-S) in the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, with over 15 years of experience in the behavioral health field. She was born and raised in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, where her passion for helping others and serving her community first began. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Slippery Rock University and her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Kent State University. Deandra is the Founder and CEO of Right Direction Behavioral Health Services, a community-based agency dedicated to providing high-quality mental and behavioral health services to individuals and families across the lifespan. She is also the Founder and CEO of Right Direction Community Services, a nonprofit organization focused on outreach, prevention, and supportive programming that empowers individuals, strengthens families, and uplifts communities. Additionally, she is a co-owner of Collaborative Community Services, based in Pennsylvania, where she continues to expand access to quality care and community-centered support. Deandra is known for her passion, vision, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Her work is grounded in the belief that everyone deserves access to compassionate, culturally responsive care and the opportunity to thrive.
