On Saturday, May 9th, The USS Cleveland, a new United States Navy ship, will be passing by the Solstice Steps at Lakewood Park, as it makes its way to Cleveland to be commissioned.  This will be the first time in U.S. history that a U.S. Navy ship is being commissioned in the State of Ohio.  A commissioning ceremony is a time-honored naval tradition that formally places a ship into active duty. It recognizes the readiness of the vessel and crew and marks the beginning of their service to the nation. The City of Lakewood, along with several other lakefront communities, will be partnering with the USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation, to host a Welcome Color Guard event.  Participants will gather at designated lakefront sites between Vermillion and Cleveland to welcome the USS Cleveland with American flags as the ship makes its way to the Port of Cleveland.  Participants will raise American flags in a patriotic display of community pride to mark this historic event.  The USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation does have flags available for a $31 donation which you can pick up at Lakewood Park the morning of May 9th.  To order a flag, visit https://secure.qgiv.com/for/ussclevelandwelcomecolorguard/event/ussclevelandwelcomecolorguard/ Our event will take place at the Solstice Steps on the morning of Saturday, May 9th. The  USS Cleveland is expected to pass by Lakewood between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM and arrive at the Port of Cleveland by 10:30 AM.
