Spice of the Month for November 2025 is Ground Nutmeg, available November 3rd on the Main Circulation Floor, one per person, while supplies last.  Each bag contains the spice, a recipe to try and information about the spice.  Share your finished recipe with us on social media.  @PLMVKC #spiceofthemonth! “Origin and Early Use Nutmeg originated in the Banda Islands in Indonesia. Known for its rich flavor and medicinal properties, early civilizations used it for cooking and as a remedy. Ancient Romans and Indians believed nutmeg had magical attributes. This spice quickly became valuable in global trade. Arab traders initially controlled the nutmeg trade, introducing it to Europe in the 6th century. As its reputation grew, so did the desire for its exotic flavors and supposed healing powers, making it a sought-after commodity. Nutmeg in Ancient Trade Nutmeg's popularity soared during the Middle Ages. European demand intensified as it was used to flavor food, preserve meats, and even mask the taste of spoiled wine. With high demand, its price skyrocketed and became a symbol of wealth and luxury. Arabs closely guarded nutmeg trade routes, supplying traders from Italy and others involved in the Mediterranean trade networks. This secrecy and exclusivity made nutmeg an extremely lucrative spice. It was often weighed against gold, highlighting its immense value at the time. The Spice Wars The pursuit and control of nutmeg led to the Spice Wars in the 17th century. European powers, particularly the Dutch and the English, fought fiercely to control the Banda Islands. The Dutch sought a monopoly to maintain high prices and profitability. These conflicts involved brutal tactics to dominate the nutmeg trade. Eventually, the Dutch secured dominance, leveraging their control to great economic benefit. HITCH HAIKOO: READING & AUTHOR TALK WITH JERRY KELLY Wednesday, November 12th, 2025. 6:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. The Brown Family Environmental Center, 9781 Laymon Road, Gambier OH 43022. A hitchhiking memoir by writer, scholar, and publisher Jerry Kelly, who began hitching at age 12 to and from the beach near his Long Island home in the early 1960s. Later, as a means of cheap or free travel for a young, impoverished student, hitchhiking had practical value and offered opportunities for road adventures in a widening world. “Hitch Haikoo” began as a long series of short poems written while the writer was hitchhiking around Ireland, in 2000. Layered upon those poems (which appear at the end of the book) is a series of essays relating experience and observation of a once-common transit practice that diminished when public imagination and culture bean embracing fear and mistrust of others. For the writer and for countless others, hitchhiking, while arduous, was replete with happy memories of trips fueled by human kindness and connection. This book relates how that once was, not so long ago. A limited number of complimentary copies of Hitch Haikoo will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Mount Vernon Library on Monday, November 3rd, 2025. The book giveaway continues while supplies last. As with all Library programs this event is free and open to the public. Recommended for ages 18 +.
