Join Dean K. Fick, local historian and book author, for an unexpectedly interesting look at the Lakeside & Marblehead Railroad (L&M), which was active from 1886 to 1964. The nearby Marblehead Peninsula was developed by industrialists in the nineteenth century primarily because of its extensive limestone deposits, and the seven-mile-long L&M was a key part of helping them do that. Each year, the line handled millions of tons of stone and related products for farmers and steel mills in the Midwest while also allowing thousands of tourists to make their way to and from the Peninsula and the rest of the nation. Although only seven miles long, it handled much more traffic per mile than many larger and more boastful lines. Find out why several generations of railfans and history enthusiasts have journeyed to Lakeside and Marblehead to trace its former path after exclaiming 'Wow! I didn't know that!'

Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon, a journey that, McBride promised, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed, unaware that the small cluster of experts who had completed the crossing billed it as “the toughest hike in the world.”
