Join the Hanneke Cassel Band for a free performance at Curry Public Library on Wednesday, May 6 at 7pm. About the Hanneke Cassel Band Effervescent and engaging, Boston-based fiddler Hanneke Cassel’s fiddle music fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton with Americana grooves and musical innovations.  She has performed and traveled across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Hanneke’s music is a blend of the contemporary and traditional, described by the Boston Globe as “exuberant and rhythmic, somehow wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness.” The Hanneke Cassel Band features Tristan Clarridge on cello/vocals and Keith Murphy on guitar/vocals.  Multi-instrumentalist, 5 -time Grand National Fiddle Champion, and pioneering cellist, Tristan Clarridge creatively synthesizes traditional folk influences with rhythmic vocabulary from jazz, rock and pop music, and is leading a revolution among adventurous young cellists throughout the USA and beyond. He has toured the world with bluegrass/nu-folk sensation Crooked Still and Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings, as well as Mike Marshall, Bruce Molsky and Cape Breton fiddle phenomenon Natalie MacMaster. Newfoundland-born guitarist Keith Murphy is a rhythmic powerhouse on guitar and a traditional singer of rare finesse. A native of Newfoundland, he has lived in New England for many years where he has been an influential presence in the traditional music scene through his work with many respected bands, as a tune writer and as director of the Northern Roots Festival in Brattleboro, VT. He has four solo recordings of traditional songs, the most recent being Bright As Amber (2023). Together, the Hanneke Cassel Band creates a cutting-edge acoustic sound that retains the integrity and spirit of the Scottish tradition.

Walk On! Gold Beach, the library’s walking group, welcomes community members to join them for their outings on Thursday mornings at 10:15am. If you would like to participate, contact Margaret Ostrowski, [email protected] to opt-in for an email about the meetup location of the coming week’s walk. The group has explored in-town walks, sometimes starting at the library, but has also ventured to the Frances Shrader Old Growth Trail, the Jim Hunt Birding Loop, and several segments of the Rogue River Walk on Jerry’s Flat Road. Walks are casually paced (slow enough to pick up litter) and not too strenuous. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

On Saturday, May 16 at 1pm-3pm, join local Art Therapist and Counselor Jana Rivers-Norton for an expressive arts workshop creating thematic collage cards to keep and trade. Ages 16 and up are welcome. Space is limited. Please reserve a space below.  Description: Collage is a visual arts technique that puts together a two-dimensional image from bits and pieces of found and cut objects, along with words, in a pleasing and often whimsical array of colors, shapes and designs. Add a theme for naming your creation, then have an imaginal dialogue to mix meaning, intrigue and fun to share! Cut-out images and supplies will be available along with snacks and tea. Feel free to bring your own photos, magazines, scraps of colored paper, and poetry or prose to decorate. No artistic skill is necessary, just a playful and contagious curiosity.
