Local fiber artist Liza Hamilton presents “Wooliza: Nature in Fiber,” at the Curry Public Library from mid August through October. Using eco-friendly wool yarn and both traditional & modern rug tufting techniques, Liza’s work aims to bring the natural world indoors. Join the artist for a free reception on Sunday, August 24 at approximately 4:45pm, following the Andrew von Oeyen piano recital. About the Artist: Fiber artist Liza Hamilton creates eco-friendly wool artworks and installations that bring the healing power of nature indoors. Walk On!, the library’s Thursday morning walking group, is opening the group to new members for their outings. The group assembles at 10:15am at the library to carpool to a different walking area each week or meets at another assembly point shared in advance by email walks last about an hour. The group has explored in-town walks, but also ventured to the Frances Shrader Old Growth Trail, the Jim Hunt Birding Loop, and several segments of the Rogue River Walk on Jerry’s Flat Road. Walks are casually paced (slow enough to pick up litter) and not too strenuous. As we prepare for Veterans Day, join us to hear stories from three local veterans, Colby Hanks, Jake Eide, and Dianne Daniels. Stay after the event to visit and enjoy coffee, tea, and cookies. Colby Hanks, served for four years in the US Army in a field artillery unit. He will share some of the experiences he had while overseas serving in Iraq. Jacob “Jake” Eide joined the US Coast Guard nine days after graduating Gold Beach High School and served for 20 years. He looks forward to sharing some of the experiences he had while serving. Commander Dianne Daniels (USN retired) will talk about what brought her to the Navy. Serving primarily in between major wars and in a support-the-fighter role, she will share her favorite and most challenging positions. Join us as we read and talk about some of the greatest science fiction tales ever written! We’ll check out stories by writers like Isaac Asimov, Ursula K. Le Guin, Ray Bradbury, and many others. Whether you’re new to sci-fi or a seasoned nerd, short stories are great introductions to various authors, themes, and sub-genres like hard sci-fi, cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic, and dystopian alternate history. Plus, short stories are quick to read and don’t require the commitment of long novels. About me: My name is Kai and I’ve been a reader of science fiction all my life, starting with the Choose Your Own Adventure series in middle school. I eventually discovered writers like Isaac Asimov, George Orwell, and Philip K. Dick. Sci-fi for me has always been a playground of ideas, and my favorite stories – whether they’re about encountering aliens, colonizing other worlds, or surviving an apocalypse – show me new ways to look at human nature and our place in the universe. We’ll meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, from 1-3pm. Anyone 13 and up is welcome. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
