Robert “Bob” Walter, Joseph Campbell’s editor, publishing partner, and good friend, will give a talk titled Mythology, Health and Healing: What’s the Story Behind the Stories at Curry Public Library on Tuesday, August 19 at 5:30pm. Bob Walter has long been intrigued by stories of “miracles” and “inexplicable” phenomena: healing via shamanic trance, curanderos’ ritual, bruja magic, indigenous spiritual practices, or so-called “alternative” practices such as homeopathy, body work, yoga, acupuncture, etc., and “closer to home,” so to say, pioneering explorations of hypnosis. This talk will share his decades of discoveries about the relationship between mythology and health. In 1990, Bob and Jean Erdman, Campbell’s widow, co-founded the Joseph Campbell Foundation, which Bob helmed for the next 32 years. A Founding Faculty Fellow at California Institute of the Arts, Bob lectured widely on experiential education. He then worked for a decade in the professional theater as a director, production manager, and playwright. Bob was a Founding Trustee of United Religions Initiative (URI), served for 13 years as a trustee of the Tamalpais Union High School District (Marin County, CA), and for over 30 years has orchestrated PlayShops worldwide. Walk On!, the library’s Thursday morning walking group, is opening the group to new members for their outings. The group assembles at 10:15am at the library to carpool to a different walking area each week walks last about an hour. The group has explored in-town walks, but also ventured to the Frances Shrader Old Growth Trail, the Jim Hunt Birding Loop, and several segments of the Rogue River Walk on Jerry’s Flat Road. Walks are casually paced (slow enough to pick up litter) and not too strenuous. Join us as we read and talk about some of the greatest science fiction tales ever written! We’ll check out stories by writers like Isaac Asimov, Ursula K. Le Guin, Ray Bradbury, and many others. Whether you’re new to sci-fi or a seasoned nerd, short stories are great introductions to various authors, themes, and sub-genres like hard sci-fi, cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic, and dystopian alternate history. Plus, short stories are quick to read and don’t require the commitment of long novels. About me: My name is Kai and I’ve been a reader of science fiction all my life, starting with the Choose Your Own Adventure series in middle school. I eventually discovered writers like Isaac Asimov, George Orwell, and Philip K. Dick. Sci-fi for me has always been a playground of ideas, and my favorite stories – whether they’re about encountering aliens, colonizing other worlds, or surviving an apocalypse – show me new ways to look at human nature and our place in the universe. We’ll meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, from 1-3pm. Anyone 13 and up is welcome. Drinks and snacks will be provided. World-renowned pianist Andrew von Oeyen will give a free recital at Curry Public Library in Gold Beach on Sunday, August 24 at 3pm. Von Oeyen will perform the music of Shubert and Ravel. This performance is funded by a generous grant from the Tammis Day Foundation. “Indisputable gifts and an extravagantly thorough and effortless technique.”– The Los Angeles TimesAcclaimed internationally for his insightful, elegant artistry and brilliant technique, ANDREW VON OEYEN has established himself as one of the most captivating pianists of his generation. Since his debut at age 16 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mr. von Oeyen has presented a wide range of concerto and solo repertoire at leading venues worldwide. He has appeared as soloist in the United States with such ensembles as the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Ravinia Festival Orchestra, Grant Park Orchestra and Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra. Prior to joining Warner Classics, Mr. von Oeyen recorded recital albums of Liszt, Debussy, and Stravinsky for the Delos label. Mr. von Oeyen has reached broad audiences through televised performances, including PBS’ A Capitol Fourth, America’s largest live concert telecast to millions around the globe from the U.S. Capitol. Mr. von Oeyen, of German and Dutch origin, was born in the U.S. He began his piano studies at age 5 and made his solo orchestral debut at age 10. An alumnus of Columbia University and graduate of The Juilliard School, where his principal teachers were Herbert Stessin and Jerome Lowenthal, he also worked with Alfred Brendel and Leon Fleisher. He won the prestigious Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1999 and also took First Prize in the Léni Fé Bland Foundation National Piano Competition in 2001.
