With the surge of Victorian literature on our screens and shelves, see if you can survive in society with calling cards, fan flirtation, and proper manners. Presenter Carolyn Kingsnorth will help you learn more about these rules and how to break them.When Carolyn Kingsnorth moved to Jacksonville 20 years ago after a career in marketing management, she fell in love with the historical gold mining town and finally found a use for her BA in History. She has spent much of her "retirement" creating activities, programs, tours, and events that share the stories of the miners, farmers, and merchants who settled the Rogue Valley. She is currently a board member of the Southern Oregon Historical Society and President of Historic Jacksonville, Inc. In both capacities, her stated goal is to "bring history to life". She frequently points out, "History is not the names, dates, places, and battles we may have learned for school tests. It's the people and their stories - they tell us why we are who we are."

Jacksonville became one of the first places in Oregon that had a small but viable community of Black people. Made up of mostly single men - miners, barbers, and blacksmiths, Harriet Johnston was the exception. She came to Jacksonville in the early 1860s with a family to raise. The fascinating saga of her spunk and endurance has permeated the generations of her family. She and a few of her descendants are buried in the Catholic section of the Jacksonville Cemetery.Jan Wright will present this story of Harriet Johnston. She is the Archivist at SOHS and former executive director of Talent Historical Society.The monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people, values, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays, in-person). We’ll have paint, paper, fabric, found objects and more on hand. Arrange and layer them however you like … or even bring your own “mixed media” items to make your art even more personal!
