"Growing Up Digital: What Parents Need to Know About Smartphones and Child Development" with Dr. Ran Barzilay, MD, PhD Dr. Ran Barzilay, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and an attending child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Barzilay completed his medical training and his PhD at Tel Aviv University and his training in child adolescent psychiatry at the Geha Mental Health Center in Israel. He joined CHOP and Penn in 2017 and established his research lab at the Lifespan Brain Institute of CHOP and Penn Medicine in 2020. His research examines factors shaping health and development in youth exposed to stress, focusing on risk and resilience mechanisms underlying variability in physical and mental health trajectories. Leveraging multimodal data including clinical, biological, and environmental measures, he seeks to uncover pathways influencing pediatric health outcomes. Dr. Barzilay's research focuses on modeling the exposome, including environmental and lifestyle factors, alongside the digital exposome, which encompasses online and technology-related exposures. LMSD students in third through eighth grades who have siblings with special needs are invited to join "SibShops," a series of fun, supportive zoom sessions just for them.Led by LMSD counselors Lisa Ruzzi and Deb Wilson-Leslie, the hour-long Wednesday night zooms will provide a relaxed and upbeat setting, where participants can: * Meet other siblings* Share common joys and challenges* Learn ways to handle tricky sibling situations* Play games, do art activities, and have fun! The six Wednesday night sessions will run from 5:00-6:00 p.m. beginning February 18, 2026. Consistent attendance is encouraged.There is no cost to participate, but you must register by emailing Ms. Wilson-Leslie at [email protected] . Montgomery Ave, Admore andZoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81654910794 On Wednesday, February 25, at 7:00 PM, the Lower Merion School District Committee for Special Education (CSE) will host an Educational Series Presentation on Building Neuroinclusive Motivation for Tweens and Teens. Dr. Rebecca Block will lead an interactive workshop for parents and educators interested in understanding the foundations of lasting motivation and how to support it in school and at home. Motivation is a key piece of executive function that often gets overlooked, and Dr. Block explores motivation science from a neurodiverse perspective. However, this is less a theoretical talk than a practical opportunity to apply motivation science to your specific situations. Participants will leave with tangible ideas to implement. Featured Speaker: Dr Rebecca Block is an educator, researcher, and neuroaffirming executive function coach. A former writing professor, she became interested in executive function and motivation support when she saw how many of her students were not equipped for the demands of college. She released a book summarizing research on teen motivation in 2024 and has facilitated workshops on building lasting motivation for educators and parents. For more information, please see

During our opening days, I had the opportunity to visit our schools. The enthusiasm of our students and the dedication of our staff were evident everywhere I went. It was wonderful to experience the start of the school year here in LMSD, after spending the summer meeting with so many community members and families, all of whom are invested in our students' safety and success.To help further our District's mission, I'm excited to share with you some initial information about the 2026-2031 District Strategic Plan process, on which we will embark together in the coming months. This process will include a series of community meetings and a survey, which will inform the District's strategic priorities for the next five years.LMSD is partnering with the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), who will guide the process, with a goal of presenting a plan to the Board of School Directors in the spring of 2026.
