For more than a decade the museumâs staff, volunteers, and community partners worked to restore our massive 115-ton Corliss steam engine to working order, 100+ years after being built by the Snow Steam Pump Works in Buffalo, N.Y. The engine was used by the York Water Company and pumped eight million gallons of water per day. Today the engine, the most powerful operating water works steam engine in North America, is a focal point of the museumâs 13,000 square foot exhibit space, where it has painstakingly been mechanically restored to its former glory and repainted its original color. Join us during First Fridays for Bethlehem Steel Flashlight Tours!Many places in the massive Bethlehem Steel plant were 24/7 operations.  Although some areas glowed with molten metal after sunset, other locations were dark, illuminated only when workers with company issued flashlights navigated the maze-like facilities.  Now guests can participate in a guided tour of the plant after dark, utilizing flashlights to experience the former steel mill by spotlighting specific features and peering into areas otherwise in the shadows during the day.  The tours will leave from the Museum, walk the Hoover-Mason trestle, look at the east side of the blast furnace complex from the ground, and return to the Museum at street level, all while using flashlights to focus on details and stories from âThe Steel.â Please bring your own flashlight and wear comfortable walking shoes. Participants will be required to sign a waiver at check in.  This tour happens entirely in public spaces, but in the dark, with uneven surfaces and limited visibility.  It is not a haunted/ghost tour, but some visitors may be uncomfortable with the lack of light, strange noises, and heights (46 feet). In the case of inclement weather (including rain, snow/ice, heavy winds, lightning), please check the museum website and WFMZ storm center for cancellations.
