Join us for the spring charcoal burn, which demonstrates the historic process for converting wood to charcoal in the 19th century. At 11:00 am on May 10, park volunteer colliers will light and begin the charcoal burn. The burn will last seven days around the clock, conc......More

Join us for the spring charcoal burn, which demonstrates the historic process for converting wood to charcoal in the 19th century. At 11:00 am on May 10, park volunteer colliers will light and begin the charcoal burn. The burn will last seven days around the clock, concluding on Saturday, May 17. During this time, visit the collier pit to speak to volunteer colliers about the historic trade and what life was like for a collier. 

Sheep Shearing Day

Observe both historic and moden techniques for shearing sheep. Along with these demonstrations, park staff and volunteers will be present to discuss and demonstrate fiber arts. * Check back closer to date for more event details*

Historically, the casting of iron products was an exact craft, and the moulders who practiced it were among the highest paid of ironworkers. It took years to gain the necessary skills, and the craft was often passed from father to son.During this program, you can try your hand as a Hopewell molder! Experience the hands-on process of making a sand mold and "casting" molds with plaster. Gain a better understanding of the craft of the molder and how they contributed to the furnace operation.This program is free and family friendly.

Learn how the land shaped the people who lived here and how people shaped it. Discover the story of this relationship, from the heyday of the iron industry, freedom seekers and Black workers, the Civilian Conservation Corps’ work here, and all the way through today.This......More

Learn how the land shaped the people who lived here and how people shaped it. Discover the story of this relationship, from the heyday of the iron industry, freedom seekers and Black workers, the Civilian Conservation Corps’ work here, and all the way through today.This hike will cover approximately 1.5 miles of easy but uneven terrain. Trails are not paved and are not wheelchair accessible. Pets on leashes are allowed. Participants should dress appropriately and wear sturdy walking or hiking shoes. Water and restrooms are not available at the hike location. Water and restroom facilities are available before and after the hike at the park Visitor Center. This hike may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. Check back for updates. Due to parking limitations, space is limited and registration is required. Directions to the starting location will be provided upon registration.
