Step into the remarkable life and legacy of the Marquis de Lafayette, a Frenchman who volunteered his service to the American cause during the Revolutionary War. Arriving in America in 1777, Lafayette became a trusted officer and confidant of General George Washington and fought in key engagements at Brandywine, Gloucester, Monmouth Courthouse, and Yorktown. He also spent the winter of 1777–78 with the Continental Army at Valley Forge. This traveling, six-banner exhibit, presented by the American Friends of Lafayette, explores Lafayette’s military service, his role in strengthening the Franco-American Alliance, and his lifelong commitment to human rights. Through historic images, carefully researched text, and engaging graphic design, visitors will discover the many dimensions of Lafayette’s life and his enduring connection to the United States. The exhibit also highlights Lafayette’s celebrated return to America in 1824, when President James Monroe invited him to visit as the nation’s official “Guest of the Nation.” As the last surviving major general of the Continental Army, Lafayette traveled approximately 6,000 miles through 24 states during his 13-month tour, receiving enthusiastic welcomes along the way. On display in the PA Room Hallway through November 17, the six floor-to-ceiling panels offer an engaging look at Lafayette’s life, career, humanitarian ideals, and lasting American legacy. The exhibit also connects Lafayette’s story with that of George Washington and explores the 2002 proclamation naming Lafayette an honorary citizen of the United States. As America commemorates its 250th anniversary in 2026, this exhibit offers an opportunity to rediscover Lafayette’s extraordinary contributions to the American Revolution and the ideals that continued to shape his life long after the war.

Have you ever wondered who you might be related to, or how your family came to the United States or, more specifically, to Pennsylvania or Ligonier? The Ligonier Valley Library’s Genealogy Forum will help you develop the tricks and tools needed to trace your family lineage, start your own family bible, or just learn more about family history in general. Each forum meeting focuses on some aspect of family research and occasionally features a guest speaker. Programs are led by or organized by the library’s Pennsylvania Room Archivist. The Genealogy Forum meets the 4th Tuesday of January, March, May, September, and October. The topic for this meeting is “AI & Family History: Foundations & First Steps: Mastering AI Basics for Genealogy” presented by Steve Little. Provides a clear intro to using AI effectively to summarize research, extract key details, and generate polished family narratives. No previous AI experience required. Homeschoolers are invited to explore a new topic each month through hands-on activities, experiments, and creative projects at the library! Each session offers an opportunity to learn, discover, and have fun while exploring a variety of subjects. Activities are designed with homeschoolers in mind and provide an engaging way to learn, experiment, and connect with other families. Join us each month to explore something new! This month’s session focuses on atmospheric science and the world of weather. The library is pleased to welcome special guest Austin Long, a meteorologist from WJAC-TV, who will help guide students through the science behind everyday weather phenomena. Participants will engage in several interactive experiments—including building a pinecone barometer, creating a tornado in a jar, and simulating rain and frost. To conclude the session, students will craft their own wind chimes to take home.

Titles & Talk Book Discussion Group delves into a wide variety of genres in both fiction and non-fiction. So, be prepared to push your comfort zone (possibly) as this includes everything from classics to biographies to science fiction to historical fiction to adventures. If you love both reading and talking about what you read, then this is the book discussion group you’ve been waiting for! The group meets from 11 am to noon on the 4th Friday of March, May, July, and September, and the 3rd Friday in November. Registration is strongly requested to ensure that we set up enough seats and that we order enough copies for participants who wish to borrow that month’s title from us. Walk-ins are always welcome!
