Spotlight On: A Look at Pittsburgh Zouaves May 8, 2025 7:00PM Free Virtual Event – Join us on Facebook or YouTube Please note: You can use the links above to watch archived Spotlight On programs! Baggy trousers, short colorfully trimmed jacket, wrap around sash and soft tasseled cap called a “fez” are elements that make up the unusual zouave uniform. Patterned after French North African troops of the mid-19th century, an American adaptation was introduced in 1860 and during the Civil War many variations adorned regiments of both northern and southern armies. This program will examine artifacts and stories from our collection related to these regiments and we will highlight many connections to the Pittsburgh area.   Michael Kraus Bio: A well-known Civil War historian, Kraus currently works as Curator/Historian for Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum. His accomplishments include several historical consultant credits for major films, writing and narrating the documentary series Civil War Minutes and Civil War Life as well as authoring articles and books regarding the conflict. Michael also is an accomplished sculptor with an impressive resume of historically themed works in bronze.

  Honor those who have served our country by attending Soldiers & Sailors’ annual Memorial Day Ceremony & Celebration. This rain or shine event is FREE and open to the public. Activities will move inside the building should it rain, so we still encourage you to attend. Our host is celebrity personality Mike Frazer of 3WS Radio. •Tour the Museum-FREE •Enjoy family-friendly activities, contests and entertainment •Food and beverages available for purchase Join us in paying tribute to our fallen PA service members! An all-day tribute to our Fallen Post 9-11 Pennsylvania Veterans will be available for guests to view.   We are also observing the 3:00 pm National Moment of Remembrance, which is an annual event asking Americans, wherever they are at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, to pause for a duration of one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States.
