The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Barbecue & Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile. This documentary was made to promote folklore and folklife experiences visitors might have in the economically depressed four-counties of the Region III SC National Heritage Corridor. These counties bear primary roots to the beginnings and growth of barbecue in South Carolina. This film explores eateries where the cooks heading up the kitchens or barbecue pits have agrarian family roots and were first taught on wood stoves or by the side of heralded barbecue pit-men. They maintain today’s recipes with ingredients and cooking methods learned at the side of mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles or grandparents in these farming communities. Music by South Carolina roots musicians moves the viewer along as they hit the road with filmmaker Stan Woodward and the folklorist from McKissick Museum as they ‘root-out’ these sites. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 20th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Charlie’s Place. This 30 minute film tells the story of an African American nightclub owned by Charlie Fitzgerald in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Despite the fact that much of the South was segregated during the time, both blacks and whites were welcomed into the club. This drew unwanted attention from groups like the KKK, who attacked Charlie’s Place in August of 1950. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 27th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. We have revamped this event – now titled Business Associates Social Hour. It’s a great way to add contacts and resources as you gather on-site at a location selected by the hosting Member. The event is held at least six times annually from 4-5 p.m. A casual setting for Members to meet, have drinks and refreshments, win raffle prizes and make connections. The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Discovering Dave, Spirit Captured in Clay. Directed and produced by George Wingard and Mark Albertin and released through the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program and Scrapbook Video, this film tells the story of David Drake, a slave potter from Edgefield, South Carolina. David was one of the first African American slaves to sign many of his works, which included jars and pitchers. In addition to producing thousands of pieces of pottery, David also wrote poetry. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 3rd, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. Research passion; archival trove; narrative itch to scratch—what is your motivation for writing a book? Perhaps more important: Who will appreciate your motivation and then want to buy and read that book? Join us at the Horry County Museum on Saturday, September 6th at 1 PM as Michael McGandy explains the basics of developing and pitching a book project to an established publisher or taking the path of self-publishing. Market trends and process essentials will be presented and ample time left for questions and answers. Michael J. McGandy is Director of University of South Carolina Press. Prior to arriving in Columbia in 2022, he was Senior Editor and Editorial Director of the Three Hills regional trade imprint at Cornell University Press. He has also worked in commercial publishing at W. W. Norton & Company, Macmillan Reference/Gale Group, and Rowman & Littlefield. The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Shoebox Memories. This 30 minute film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, is a collection of stories from ten WWII veterans. Their stories begin with Eisenhower’s orders to invade Normandy and end with the liberation of Dachau on April 24, 1945. Of the ten WWII Veterans, two are native South Carolinians while the rest are retirees who moved to the Beaufort area. The veterans share their recollections about critical events occurring during WWII including: D-Day, the invasion of Normandy, the Malmedy Massacre, a B-17 bombing in Cologne, Germany, the burning of Manila, the landing at Iwo Jima, and the liberation of Dachau. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 10th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
