“The Battles of Fort Watson & Fort Motte, 1781” The Horry County Museum presents a program by Steven Smith on his new book The Battles of Fort Watson & Fort Motte, 1781 on Saturday, August 8th at 1:00 PM. In his book, Smith relates the history of four critical weeks from April 12 until May 12, 1781, in which the tide of the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War turned in favor of the Americans. The book focuses on General Francis Marion’s and Colonel Henry Lee’s capture of two key British forts, Fort Watson and Fort Motte, coordinating with Nathanael Greene in retaking the South Carolina backcountry. These posts defended the supply line between Charleston and the British-occupied villages of Camden and Ninety Six. Once the two forts were lost, the British had to abandon the backcountry and were confined to Charleston and ultimately abandoned the city in December 1782. Steven D. Smith, is a Research Professor, Emeritus at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina. He is the former Director of the Institute, and has over 40 years’ experience in historical archaeology, largely focused on military sites of the American Revolution in the South. He has conducted excavations associated with Francis Marion and American Revolutionary War battlefields including the siege of Fort Motte, Parker’s Ferry, Black Mingo, Snow’s Island, Camden, the siege of Ninety Six, and the battle of Williamson’s Plantation. He is the author or co-author of six books, including, Partisans, Guerillas, and Irregulars: Historical Archaeology of Asymmetric Warfare, 2019, University of Alabama Press, and Francis Marion and the Snow’s Island Community, United Writers Press, 2021. His latest book, coauthored with Colonel Kevin Dougherty, is entitled Leading Like the Swamp Fox: The Leadership Lessons of Francis Marion, and The Battles of Fort Watson and Fort Motte, 1781. The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Battle of Camden, part of the Carolina Stories Series from ETV. In this film, Revolutionary War re-enactors help tell the story of this crucial event in American history, one of the worst American battle defeats in the Revolution. From new guerilla tactics employed by American militia to the actions of an over-confident king, the tragic events that transpired on August 16, 1780 became the catalyst that led to the birth of a nation. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 12th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. “The End of the Road Bluegrass Band to perform at the Horry County Museum” The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by The End of the Road Bluegrass Band on Saturday, August 15th at 1:00 PM. The End of the Road Bluegrass Band is a regional band based out of Conway, South Carolina. Formed in 2001, the band plays traditional bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. They have performed in several venues and churches, including a monthly concert series held by the Rivertown Bluegrass Society and the Southeastern Bluegrass Association of SC. The band also performed at the first annual Sea Mountain Fiddlers Convention and Bluegrass Festival where they shared the stage with such bands as Alan Bibey & Grasstowne, Carolina Blue, and The Virginia Luthiers. Band members include Joe Hudson on guitar/vocals, Ron Mew on mandolin/vocals, Blake Marlowe on banjo/vocals, and Stephanie Sullivan on fiddle. The concert will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway, S.C. This event is free and open to the public. The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Men of Honor: Freddie Stowers & Alvin York. This film follows the stories of two Medal of Honor recipients from World War I, Freddie Stowers, and Alvin York. Stowers, a native of South Carolina, was a corporal and squad leader who was killed in action while leading an assault that helped to break the German line in northern France. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1991, and became the first African American soldier to receive the award in World War I. Also, a corporal in the US Army, Alvin York went from being a conscientious objector to war hero when he captured more than one hundred German prisoners of war in combat. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 19th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. The Horry County Museum presents a program in collaboration with Coastal Carolina University and the South Carolina 250th Commission on Saturday, August 22nd, 2026 at 1 PM. This lecture will cover The Formation of Chickamauga Towns: A Study of Cherokee Gender, Kinship, and Resistance in the Revolutionary Era. Jamie Myers is as historian of American Indians of the Southeastern United States. She received her B.A. in history from Truett0McConnell University, her M.A. from the University of North Georgia and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She is currently an associate professor of History at the University of North Carolina, Pembroke, where she teaches courses on American Indian history, the history of global Indigenous peoples and the colonial and early American history. Her talk will be based on the recently published essay entitled The Formation of the Chickamauga Towns: A Study of Cherokee Gender, Kinship, and Resistance in the Revolutionary Era in the Gendered Republic: Reimagining Identity in the New Nation edited by Craig Friend and Lori Glover. The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Against All Odds: The Jim Dozier Story. Produced by The United Bank Center for Military and Veteran Studies, this film tells the story of Horry County native, and Medal of Honor recipient, Jim Dozier. Dozier, a Galivants Ferry native, was awarded the Medal of Honor for valor in battle in World War I in France, becoming the first resident of Horry County to receive the nation’s highest military honor. The film is produced by Rod Gragg, an author, historian and educator at Coastal Carolina University. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 26th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
