The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Saving Sandy Island. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, this film details the struggle to save an exceptional South Carolina island and its Gullah community from development. Home to endangered species and rare long leaf pine forests, Sandy Island is the largest undeveloped freshwater island on the east coast. The program tells the story of the unique coalition of conservationists, state agencies, businessmen and community residents that came together to save this extraordinary place and preserve a historic culture. Saving Sandy Island takes a multi-faceted look at the sensitive issue of environmental development along this stretch of South Carolina’s coastline. A year in the making, this program explores the complex issues surrounding the threat of development to Sandy Island, the residents and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Perspectives from all the main players in the debate-from the residents who are descended from freed slaves, to the environmentalists, to the developers themselves-are offered during this unflinching look. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 4th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. On February 7th children will learn how to make homemade ink using berries, and have the chance to write or draw with a feather quill. For the past 16 years, Joe McGill has been sleeping in former slave dwellings throughout the United States. His adventures are now chronicled in the book Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery. Join us at the Horry County Museum at 1 PM on Saturday, February 7th as McGill discusses why this simple act is still being requested by historic sites of enslavement. Joseph McGill, Jr., is the founder of the Slave Dwelling Project. By arranging for people to sleep in extant slave dwellings, this project has brought much needed attention to these often-neglected structures that are vitally important to the American built environment. He has conducted over 250 overnights in approximately 150 different sites in 25 states and the District of Columbia. He has interacted with the descendants of both the enslaved communities and of the enslavers associated with antebellum historic sites. He speaks with school children and college students, with historical societies, community groups, and members of the public. Since 2016, McGill has expanded the Slave Dwelling Project to offer a program of living history called “Inalienable Rights: Living History Through the Eyes of the Enslaved.” The Project has conducted 7 conferences since 2013. Mr. McGill was a field officer for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, working to revitalize the Sweet Auburn commercial district in Atlanta, GA and to develop a management plan for the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area. Mr. McGill served as the Executive Director of the African American Museum located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is also the former Director of History and Culture at Penn Center, St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Penn School was the first school built during the Civil War for the education of recently freed slaves. Mr. McGill appears in the book Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz. He is also a member of the South Carolina Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. This event will be held at the Horry County Museum located at 805 Main Street, Conway, S.C. The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Mapping of Kosciuszko’s Tunnel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, this 30 minute film highlights the story of the Kosciuszko tunnel and the technology behind the 3D mapping and preservation efforts concerning the little known tunnel that is a part of the Ninety Six National Historic Site in Ninety Six, South Carolina. The Mapping of Kosciuszko’s Tunnel project is collaboration between SCETV, The University of South Florida (USF), The Alliance for Integrated Spatial Technologies (AIST) and the National Park Service. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 11th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. Hill, who has over twenty years of experience as a blacksmith, will demonstrate traditional forging techniques for the public. The L.W. Paul Living History Farm re-creates life on the one horse family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 through traditional farming activities. The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Gullah Roots. This film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, explores South Carolina’s ties with West Africa, educating viewers about Gullah heritage, including spiritual, musical and artistic traditions. A sequel to SCETV’s 1990 documentary Family Across the Sea, this film was produced by Betsy Newman and Xavier Blake, and directed, written and edited by Newman. The film aims to raise awareness about the Gullah Geechee community and its ties to West Africa. It also examines the challenges many in that community face today and the progress they have made since the first homecoming to Sierra Leone over 30 years ago. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 18th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
