Shiloh is pleased to announce a special ranger-led hike titled “A Mountain Upheaved, Peabody Defends the Front” on Saturday, June 28, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.Follow Park Ranger Timothy Arnold and retrace the steps of Colonel Everett Peabody’s early morning patrol as they run into the Confederate skirmishers of the 3rd Mississippi Battalion.Hikers will learn about the approach routes of both the Union patrol and the Confederate skirmishers as they met in Fraley Field for the opening shots of the battle. Then participants will follow the path of Prentiss’s Division as they engage in a fighting withdrawal back to Peabody’s camps.The hike will take place from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hikers will meet at the park visitor center before driving out to the starting point of the hike. The distance of the hike is about 2.5 miles over moderate terrain. Participants should be prepared to trek over uneven terrain through fields, thick woods and underbrush, cross streams and steep ravines with water.   Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. It is recommended participants bring insect repellent, sunscreen and at least 64 oz of water or more if the day is projected to be hot and humid.Pre-registration is required to participate in the hike. In celebration of the Independence Day weekend, Shiloh National Military Park is thrilled to present “Booming for Independence,” featuring the Shiloh Cannon Crew. Visitors will experience authentic Civil War artillery firing demonstrations with a 6-pounder Field Piece on July 4th weekend.Join us for two days of living history as living historians in period uniforms demonstrate and explain the procedures, tools, and ordnance used by both Union and Confederate cannoneers during the Civil War.Demonstration Schedule:Saturday, July 5th:10:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m.Sunday, July 6th:11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m.                         Each 20-minute program will feature two cannon firings, providing an exhilarating glimpse into Civil War artillery practices. After each demonstration, guests are invited to get an up-close look at the cannon and its implements, as well as engage with our knowledgeable living historians.

On Saturday July 12 Shiloh National Military Park will honor the 92nd anniversary of the founding of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) with special tours and a temporary museum exhibit that highlights the invaluable contributions of the CCC and the men of Companies #2425 and #2423.Established under President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression the CCC employed millions of young men in environmental conservation efforts across the country significantly impacting landscapes and communities. Shiloh and Corinth along with their neighboring areas were notably influenced by the work of Companies #2425 and #2423 which primarily consisted of African American World War I veterans.Company #2425 formed at Fort Oglethorpe Georgia on June 27 1933 made its home at Shiloh constructing Camp Young in honor of General Charles Young and remained there for eight years. The company’s remarkable efforts included the enhancement of park roads the construction of erosion control dams and bridges the erection of stone walls the planting of thousands of trees and support for flood victims in 1937.To celebrate this legacy Education Specialist Matt McMillen will lead two hybrid driving and walking tours that will delve into the significant works completed by the CCC at Shiloh and the camp area.Tour Details:First Tour: Departing from the visitor center at 8:00 a.m. concluding around 10:30 a.m.Second Tour: Departing from the visitor center at 1:00 p.m. concluding around 3:30 p.m.Each tour is limited to ten vehicles pre-registration is required.Participants can expect approximately 15 miles of driving and two miles of walking over moderate terrain.Additionally a temporary museum exhibit will be unveiled showcasing the CCC’s contributions to Shiloh National Military Park and the surrounding communities. This exhibit will be on display for the entire month of July.“This unique tour is a way to recognize and honor the often-overlooked contributions of the CCC and the men of Company #2425 ” said McMillen. “Their hard work and dedication not only shaped the landscape of Shiloh National Military Park but also left a lasting legacy that deserves to be remembered.”

On Sunday, July 20, Shiloh National Military Park will host an exciting double-header of vintage base ball, presented by the Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball. The action kicks off at 12:00 p.m. as the Nashville Maroons take on the Franklin Farriers. Following this thrilling match, the Farriers will return to the field at 2:00 p.m. to face the Phoenix of East Nashville. These teams will don authentic period uniforms and adhere to the rules and regulations established in 1863, the same time the Civil War raged across the nation.The impact of the Civil War extended beyond the battlefield, playing a crucial role in the spread of America's beloved pastime. Attendees can expect to witness the charm and camaraderie of base ball as it was played 160 years ago.The best part? Admission is free! Join us on Saturday July 26 for a unique opportunity to explore the rich history of Shiloh National Military Park with Ranger Anthony Killion. This special driving tour titled “Shiloh: Then & Now ” invites visitors to journey back in time to the establishment of the park in December 1894 and discover the significant transformations that have taken place over the past 130 years.Date and Time: Saturday July 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Location: Begins at the Shiloh Visitor CenterFormat: Car caravan (limited to 10 vehicles)Participants are advised to dress appropriately for the weather prepare for short walks on easy flat terrain and bring sufficient water. Insect repellant is also recommended to enhance comfort during the tour. Attendees with an interest in post-Civil War history or curiosity about park management throughout the years are encouraged to reserve a spot by calling the Shiloh Visitor Center at (731) 689-5696.
