Christmas in the United States developed from European Christian traditions celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, but it was not widely observed in early America due to Puritan opposition to religious festivities. By the mid-19th century, influenced by writers like Washington Irving and Charles Dickens, Christmas began to evolve into a family-centered holiday emphasizing generosity, goodwill, and celebration. By the late 1800s, it had become a major national holiday, blending religious meaning with popular customs such as gift-giving, decorated trees, and the figure of Santa Claus.
