The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is hosting an exciting event to celebrate Barbara Bush’s 100th birthday. Of course, everyone remembers Barbara Bush for her elegant pearls and her essence of etiquette, and in honor of that, the Bush Family Home will have everything pearls! To be held on Saturday, June 7 from 10 am-3 pm, there will be pearl-themed games, science, crafts, prizes, and more! The event is free but tours of the house are regular admission. Barbara Pierce was born on June 8, 1925 in Queens, New York City, New York. She grew up in Rye, New York and was a daughter of Marvin and Pauline Pierce. Marvin Pierce was the president of McCall Corporation, the publisher of the popular women’s magazines Redbook and McCall’s. He was also an ancestor of Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the U.S. Barbara met George H.W. Bush in 1941 at a Christmas Dance. She supported her husband in his campaigns. As First Lady, Barbara frequently carried out charity work, including her projects to promote literacy and her support for people with AIDS. She founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She died in April of 2018 at the age of 92, seven months before her husband. “It’s all about pearls and we’ve had the best time putting this together!” said Site Educator Erin Frigo. Because of Barbara Bush’s work in literacy, the books in Robin’s Reading Room located at the site will be available for reading. Each child will be able to take home one book. The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is located at 1412 West Ohio St. in Midland. The hours for the home are: Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; the last tour begins at 4:15 p.m. The Bush Family Home joined the Texas Historical Commission in 2023 and is one of 41 sites in the state of Texas. The Bush Family Home State Historic Site announces a new program coming this summer. Four movies from the 1950s will be shown in the backyard of the home. This year’s theme is monster movies. All guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and snacks. Each event will be from 6:30-9:00 pm. During the series, the dates, topics and speakers will be: June 10 – The Thing from Another World (1951) June 24 – Creature from The Black Lagoon (1954) July 8 – Curse of Frankenstein (1957) July 22 – Dracula (1958) Activites associated with each movie will be available at each movie screening. Those include: • An activity and craft about flying saucers using paper plates, frisbees, and a boomerang for The Thing from Another World. • A water activity and fossil craft using air dry clay for the Creature from The Black Lagoon. • An experiment and a craft for the Curse of Frankenstein. • A movie poster design activity for Dracula. Movie going was a major social event, with many people attending theaters regularly. Because tv ownership went up in the 1950s, theaters added to the experience with the introduction of cinerama, 3D, and other widescreen technologies. Even George W. Bush would ride his bike downtown Midland to see cowboy serials and science fiction movies. “The Summer Movie Series is meant to showcase the entertainment in theaters while the Bush family lived in Midland in the 1950s,” said Site Educator Chase Kirby. “It will be fun for the whole family, young or old.” The Bush Family Home State Historic Site is located at 1412 West Ohio St. in Midland.
