The Stark Museum of Art is pleased to announce the 2025 Juried Student Art Exhibition on view March 26 – May 17, 2025. The Juried Student Art Exhibition theme is offered in conjunction with the Stark Museum of Art’s upcoming special exhibition 'Childhood Classics: 100 Years of Original Illustration from the Art Kandy Collection' on view March 8 – July 12, 2025. The exhibition of student artwork will be juried by Staff at the Stark Museum of Art, and will include up to 100 works of art created by 4th – 12th grade artists in Region 5, TX and Calcasieu Parish, LA. Artwork will be displayed in the museum’s Community Art Gallery and featured in an online exhibition. The Stark Museum of Art will present three different awards to selected artists. Merit Awards will be presented to the student artists with the highest scoring artwork from grades 4th-6th, 7th–9th and 10th-12th. Director’s Choice Awards will be selected by the Executive Director of the Stark Museum of Art and given to two student artists from each of the three grade groups. The Signature Image Award will be presented to the student artist whose artwork best illustrates the exhibition theme. Artwork should illustrate a joyful image from childhood.

Learn about the Victorian Era Language of Flowers and Make a Pressed Flower Creation! Have you ever heard that flowers have special meanings? Throughout history, people have placed symbolic messaging on plants and flowers. During the Victorian Era, people created secret messages for each other with flower arrangements. It was common practice to have a Language of Flowers manual handy to help decipher the message of the flowers you exchanged. Matron of The W.H. Stark House, Miriam Stark, had one of these manuals in her expansive book collection. This workshop will consist of a short lesson on the Victorian Era’s use of the Language of Flowers. Feather & Arrow Flower Preservation will teach attendees the art of pressing and preserving flowers. Guests will leave the workshop with their own pressed flower creation. The cost for this workshop is $35. Registration is required for all attendees. Children 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Did you know gardens tell stories, too? Join Senior Horticulturist Deb Wiles for a walking tour of The W.H. Stark House gardens to explore the history of the house grounds. Learn about the Stark family’s conservatories, their prized orchid collection and how the grounds and gardens have changed over time. The walking tour will also highlight the plants currently blooming at The W.H. Stark House. The tour requires walking on hard surfaces and textured pathways. Please wear comfortable shoes. Orange, Texas is the birthplace of the author who wrote the best-selling picture book of all time. Few people know the name of Janette Sebring Lowrey, who penned 'The Poky Little Puppy.' That book, one of the original Little Golden Books, is her most well-known publication. Sebring Lowrey also wrote 15 other books for children and youth. Join us this summer for an indoor reading adventure at The W.H. Stark House! Our 2025 Summer Reading Festival will explore the world of Grimm’s Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm. Each participant will receive an age-appropriate book to enjoy and keep, as well as participate in fun, hands-on activities throughout the Carriage House and inside The W.H. Stark House.  Come read, imagine and create with us this summer – all in the comfort of air conditioning! Each session is identical, so please select the date that works best for your family.
