In 1963 Johnson took on the role as the nation's president after president John F Kennedy was assassinated. In an address before Congress Johnson pledged support for Kennedy's legislative agenda that included civil rights and education legislation.In conjunction with the civil rights movement Johnson overcame southern resistance and convinced Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed many forms of racial segregation. Johnson signed it into law on July 2 1964. In 1965 he achieved passage of a second civil rights bill the Voting Rights Act to outlaw discrimination in voting and to allow many African Americans in the southern states to vote for the first time. In 1965 the "Great Society" program became the agenda for Congress:Aid to education.Protection of civil rights (including the right to vote).Urban renewal.Medicare.Conservation and beautification.Control and prevention of crime and delinquency.Promotion of the arts.Consumer protection.Johnson was also known for escalating the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War which was opposed by many Americans.After leaving the presidency in 1969 Johnson returned to Johnson City Texas. During his retirement he wrote his memoirs called The Vantage Point taught students and participated in a series of national symposia on the critical issues of modern America. Johnson died at his ranch on January 22 1973 and is buried in the family cemetery at the LBJ Ranch near his birthplace. Shortly after his death the Texas State Legislature created a legal state holiday to be observed every year on August 27 to honor Johnson. The involvement stimulated a large angry antiwar movement based especially on university campuses in the U.S. and abroad. Summer riots broke out in most major cities after 1965 and crime rates soared as his opponents raised demands for "law and order" policies. The Democratic Party split in multiple feuding factions and after Johnson did poorly in the 1968 New Hampshire primary he ended his bid for reelection. Republican Richard Nixon was elected to succeed him. Historians argue that his presidency marked the peak of modern liberalism in the United States after the New Deal era. Johnson is ranked favorably by some historians because of his domestic policies.

U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a vote of 407&ndash 0 on October 25 2001. It requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day". President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18 2001 (as Public Law 107-89[1]). It is a discretionary day of remembrance. On September 4 2002 President Bush used his authority created by the resolution and proclaimed September 11 2002 as Patriot Day. On this day the President requests that the American flag be flown at half-staff at individual American homes at the White House and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments home and abroad. The President also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 A.M. Dolores Hidalgo is a city in Guanajuato in Mexico where the Mexican War of Independence started in 1810. It is the Mexican president who heralds the start of the Mexican Independence Day at exactly 11pm on September 15 every year. It is a Mexican national public holiday. After the speech of the Mexican president which takes place on the balcony of his palace the public starts to celebrate their country by screaming and singing the national Mexican anthem. The Mexicans celebrate the success of the revolt with fireworks and parties all over Mexico. Parades through the streets are organized and the Mexican flag is waved proudly. Families and friends spend the Mexican Independence Day together and enjoy the concerts and scream their &ldquo iViva!&rdquo together. The date refers back to the speech of Miguel Hidalgo a priest who was a member of the Guadalupanos a secret organization with the aim to free Mexico from the Spanish government.
