(a) February 19 is State of Texas Anniversary Remembrance Day (STAR Day) in honor of Texas joining the Union and the day that James Pinckney Henderson became the first governor of the State of Texas in 1846.(b) State of Texas Anniversary Remembrance Day (STAR Day) shall be regularly observed by appropriate and patriotic programs in the public schools and other places to properly commemorate the annexation of this state and to inspire a greater appreciation for the history of this state.Added by Acts 1999, 76th Leg., ch. 502, Sec. 1, eff. Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Legendary Children's Author Turns 117 This week marks the 108th birthday of one Theodor Seuss Geisel. If that name doesn't mean much to you perhaps &lsquo Dr. Seuss' will ring a few more bells. A prolific children's author Dr. Seuss may have written in a type of English that didn't always make perfect sense but his universal appeal is unmistakeable. His 46 children's books have been loved by pretty much any child and adult who picked one up. This Friday the good doctor would have turned 108. Alas he passed away in 1991 after a battle with throat cancer after many years of poor health.Dr. Seuss's books are jam-packed with imaginative characters and playful rhyme &ndash some of his most celebrated titles include best-sellers like Green Eggs and Ham The Cat in the Hat One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish Horton Hatches the Egg Horton Hears a Who! and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. Indeed copies of some of those are still handed down in my family.The children's author's birthday is proving a great excuse for many libraries and museums to put on extravagant Seuss exhibitions but whether the love will extend online I'm yet to see &ndash for example I don't recall Geisel receiving his own Google Doodle before now even though his delightful wordplay and charming cartoon illustrations are perfect Doodle fodder.Did you grow up reading Dr. Seuss books?
