The Sarasa Ensemble takes a closer look at the extended Bach family and its many musical talents in a performance titled “All in the Family,” Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m. The program highlights works for oboe, strings and continuo by sons Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel, cousin Johann Bernhard, wife Anna Magdalena, and the master himself, Johann Sebastian Bach. “Johann Sebastian Bach belongs to a family that seems to have received a love and aptitude for music as a gift of Nature to all its members in common.” ~ CPE Bach, 1754. Musicians include Daniel Bates, oboe Christina Day Martinson, Rebecca Nelson and Danilo Benina, violins Anna Griffis, viola Jennifer Morsches and Timothy Merton, cellos and John McKean, harpsichord. A collective of international instrumentalists and vocalists, the Sarasa Ensemble performs classical music of outstanding quality, spanning the 17th to the 21st centuries, on both period and modern instruments, and brings this music to diverse communities.

The Brattleboro Concert Choir performs Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem. There will be two concerts: Saturday, May 16, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 17, at 4 p.m., at Persons Auditorium on Potash Hill, Marlboro VT. “The Concert Choir is deeply committed to a high level of musical beauty, emotional expression, and community connection, and this piece reflects that commitment,” says Music Director Jonathan Harvey. “Brahms’ Requiem is one of the most beloved pieces in the choral repertoire, and for good reason — it deftly and tenderly takes listeners on a journey grappling with the aftermath of death.” Most pieces called “requiem” honor those who have passed away, but Brahms took a different path as he wrote this work, which focuses on the living, those left behind, and how we can move forward with loss. Harvey notes, “In this time, Brahms’ Requiem is a deeply moving and cathartic way for all of us, performers and audience alike, to wrestle with losses of many kinds. The human facts of the transience of life, the need for comfort, the hope for resolution, and the rewards of effort are all here, to inspire and console us today.”

Ben Cosgrove is a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape, place, and environment. He has been described by the Boston Globe as “a sonic plein-air painter… [using] his piano as a paintbrush”. Over the last year, Ben has been collaborating with both the Brattleboro Music Center and Landmark Trust USA, composing new work inspired by their respective southern Vermont landscapes.
