The convergence of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven in the city of Vienna toward the end of the 18th century created a miraculous amount of incredible music. Mozart and Haydn became friends and were inspired by each other’s works. The young Beethoven came onto the scene, trying to find his place but knowing the musical culture was well established. The output from the three composers was astounding over this short span of twenty years: 30 symphonies and 46 string quartets! Enjoy an evening of exceptional traditional music as the BMC closes this popular summer series. Performing will be Keith Murphy and Becky Tracy, with Jenna Moynihan and Màiri Chaimbeul. Keith and Becky form a cornerstone of the New England traditional music folk scene. Their music is known far and wide as a result of decades of teaching, performances and many recordings. Steeped in the music of Ireland, French Canada and Keith’s native Newfoundland, they have forged a unique musical path with their arrangements of traditional songs and fiddle tunes, while incorporating their own compositions, many of which have become part of the repertoire of players across the US and beyond. Jenna Moynihan, from Lakewood, NY, and Màiri Chaimbeul, from the Isle of Skye, combine to make contemporary music rooted in the melodies of Scotland and Appalachia. Their music breathes new life into old tunes and merges their wide-ranging influences into a sound that is at once grounded and adventurous. On fiddle and harp, Jenna and Màiri are breathtaking in their musicianship and the depth of soulfulness they bring to their arrangements of Scottish music. Keith has worked with them both, along with Brian O’Donovan, through the Celtic Sojourn concerts in the Boston area. He has also toured with Jenna as part of the Hanneke Cassel Trio and has recently recorded with Màiri. All four musicians are very excited for the opportunity to perform together at Music Under the Stars. Admission is free with donations welcome. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. at Retreat Farm, with the concert at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to bring lawn chairs and a picnic dinner. Please note that no outside alcohol is permitted, but beverages are available for purchase on site. Also, please leave your dog at home unless it is a service animal. Music Under the Stars series sponsors include Guilford Sound, Friends of the Brattleboro Music Center and the Vermont Jazz Center, the Vermont Arts Council, and other generous donors.

Zara Bode’s Little Big Band is a musical group that performs classic American swing music, drawing inspiration from artists like Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt, and Ella Fitzgerald. The band features Zara Bode on vocals, known for her work with The Sweetback Sisters, and a horn section led by clarinetist and arranger Anna Patton. Other members have included Ty Gibbons on upright bass, Alton Lathrop on guitar, Ron Kelly on saxophone, and Stefan Amidon on drums. The band’s performances are known for their vibrant and fresh take on old radio hits, delivered with “aplomb and affection”. They are a regional favorite in Southern Vermont.
