Tessitura, directed by Mark Nelson, is a chamber choir that ex​plores music of the Baroque and Modern eras. This concert features “Music of ​Monteverdi and Poulenc” Sunday, March 22, at the BMC. Claudio Monteverdi and Francis Poulenc, despite their living in different eras, are linked through the evolution of choral and sacred music. Poulenc found inspiration in Monteverdi’s works to develop his own a cappella style. The 3 p.m. concert will include Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna Louis Andriessen’s Un beau baiser Poulenc’s 4 Motets pour un temps de penitence Fenno Heath’s Kyrie, from Mass and Eric Whitacre’s Sleep. Nelson explains Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna is the only surviving fragment of the composer’s second opera “Arianna,” which marked his launching of le nuove musiche, or “new music.”  Poulenc’s 4 Motets has daring harmonies with a profound Catholic piety. As Nelson says, “In Poulenc, there is something of the monk and something of the rascal.”

Recognized as one of today’s most gifted artists and enjoying an active career as both conductor and pianist, Ignat Solzhenitsyn performs Sunday, March 29, as part of our Chamber Series. The 4 p.m. program will feature Solzhenitsyn playing Josef Haydn’s The Last Seven Words of Our Savior on the Cross, HOB. XX:IC (1786), its arrangement revised and recorded by Solzhenitsyn in 2014. A winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Solzhenitsyn is the conductor laureate of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and the principal guest conductor of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Solzhenitsyn serves on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music. H​e has been featured on many radio and television specials, including CBS Sunday Morning and ABC’s Nightline. Of local interest, Solzhenitsyn is a BMC alum as a young child, he studied with Mrs. Chonghyo Shin.

Our Chamber Series is proud to present Musicians from Marlboro Group Three Saturday, April 11. This season’s third touring ensemble from “the classical world’s most coveted retreat” (The New Yorker) showcases four outstanding singers. Bridget Esler, soprano Chihiro Asano, mezzo-soprano and Patrick Bessenbacher, tenor, will perform vocal works by Brahms, Schumann, and Britten, with pianist Lydia Brown. The 7 p.m. program will begin and end with Oliver Neubauer, violin Judith Serkin, cello and Solomon Ge, piano, playing two of Haydn’s most inviting piano trios. Piano Trio in E-flat Minor, Hob. XV:31, is considered one of his most dramatic and emotionally charged chamber works, composed during his second London visit. In contrast, Haydn’s Piano Trio in C Major, Hob. XV:27 exemplifies his mature chamber style, combining elegance, wit, and inventive thematic development.

The Brattleboro Camerata is a chamber choir devoted to exploring the beauty andpower of Renaissance-era and Renaissance-inspired music. The Camerata’sperformances breathe new life into old music, bringing vivid and expressive intensity toinnovative thematic programs that highlight canonic favorites, under-performed gems byneglected voices, and new works that allow us to see early music in a different light.With Music Director Jonathan Harvey, the Camerata endeavors to ensure that earlymusic continues as a visceral, living tradition. Recent programs have included concerts devoted to parallels between Renaissancepieces and later works that were influenced by them, the music of the Renaissance inLatin America, and Renaissance and Renaissance-inspired works for double choir.They have highlighted music by well-known Renaissance-era composers such asPalestrina, Victoria, Byrd, and Josquin marginalized Renaissance voices such asVittoria Aleotti, Vicente Lusitano, Maddalena Casulana, and Juan Gutierrez de Padilla and contemporary composers such as Reena Esmail, P.D.Q. Bach, and Kitty Brazelton. Twice a year, the Camerata seeks new members, and is open by audition to all singersof every voice part. We especially invite BIPOC singers, and singers of all genderidentities, to join us. Our repertoire for fall 2025 includes music of J.S. The Brattleboro Concert Choir performs an exciting and challenging repertoire, ranging from classic choral masterpieces to rarely heard and newly commissioned works. With Music Director Jonathan Harvey, the Concert Choir is deeply committed to a high level of musical beauty, emotional expression, and community connection. More than 70 years ago, amid co-founding the Marlboro Music Festival and laying the groundwork for what would become our Music Center, violinist and conductor Blanche Moyse envisioned a community chorus that would unite local voices in the performance of great choral music. Since that time, the Concert Choir’s repertoire has included such classic works as the Requiems of Verdi, Duruflé, Howells, and Mozart, Handel’s Israel in Egypt, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, and Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil, as well as contemporary music by Arvo Pärt, Ola Gjeilo, Zanaida Robles, Gwyneth Walker, Nico Muhly, Sydney Guillaume, Keane Southard, and Morten Lauridsen. Twice a year, the Concert Choir seeks new members and is open to all singers of every voice part. We especially invite BIPOC singers, and singers of all gender identities, to join us. Our repertoire for the 2025-26 concert year will include a winter program entitled “Thy Coming Morrow will be Clear and Bright: Music of Prophecy and the Future,” featuring hopeful works by Schubert, Copland, Allegri, Vaughan Williams, Gibbons, Moses Hogan, Mari Esabel Valverde, Marques Garrett, Gregory Brown, Maria Guinand, and Bob Dylan. The spring program will be the transcendently beautiful and inspiring Brahms Requiem with orchestra.
