The BMC is proud to present a special concert honoring long-time BMC faculty member, Alex Ogle. “Sky, Air and Wind: A Celebration of Alex Ogle” is scheduled for Sunday, November 2, at 2:30 p.m. A professional flutist and flute teacher, Alex was most interested in making music and understanding how music touches our hearts. His long performing career encompassed a splendid variety of music making, including the original touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar, and productions with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, the local Wantastiquet Players, and the New England Bach Festival Orchestra. Throughout his career, he remained devoted to teaching all ages – from the Waldorf School in Garden City, NY, to Dartmouth, Amherst and Mount Holyoke colleges. The program will honor him by featuring pieces that he loved dearly and performed beautifully during his career. They include Bach’s Flute Sonata in E, on piano Haydn’s Trio in G Major Roussel’s Deux poèmes de Ronsard and Martinů’s Trio. The concert is led by Bart Feller, Alex’s friend and former student. Feller is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and current faculty at The Julliard School Pre-College, and Rutgers University. He is also the principal flute of the New Jersey Symphony. Feller will be joined by longtime friends and colleagues of Alex: Alison Hale and Robin Matathias, flute Kathy Andrew, violin Judith Serkin, cello Greg Hayes and Susan Dedell, piano, and soprano Junko Watanabe.

Palaver Strings presents a tango-inspired program, preceded by a tango workshop, Saturday, November 8, at the BMC. The 7 p.m. program, “Port City,” explores tango music throughout the genre’s history, and features bandoneon visionary Heyni Solera as soloist and composer. The bandoneon is a type of concertina that is very popular in tango music.  Palaver Strings will perform danceable classics alongside contemporary tango-inspired compositions. This performance celebrates tango’s ongoing evolution and the powerful interplay between music and dance, and how the genre has been reclaimed by marginalized identities, especially women and queer artists. The dancers will offer a 6 p.m. tango workshop before the concert, at the BMC. Admission to the workshop is by donation. Palaver Strings is a Grammy-nominated, musician-led string ensemble and nonprofit organization based in Portland, ME. Its mission is to strengthen and inspire community through music. Palaver’s musicians share artistic and administrative leadership, guided by a passion for engaging new audiences, addressing social justice issues, amplifying underrepresented voices and equally committed to performance and education.

The Sarasa Ensemble presents “Sweet Sleep,” Friday, November 14 at the BMC. Coinciding with Nature’s annual moment of repose, the ensemble will explore music inspired by the many states of everlasting sleep. The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. and include works for soprano, strings, lute and organ.  It will feature Georg Muffat’s gorgeous Concerto grosso No. 4 in G minor Dulce somnium, which inspired the program title. “Some of us sleep deeply, some of us lightly, some need nighttime tea to help fall asleep, some a book or a podcast or listening to music,” explains Sarasa co-founder Jennifer Morsches. “Some of us have recurring dreams, some unwanted nightmares, and many need something repetitive to help ease us to slumber, such as a lullaby, perhaps counting sheep, or the lull of water or waves on a beach. And then, for all of us, there is the inevitability of eternal rest.” The ensemble will include Kristen Watson, soprano Elizabeth Blumenstock and Rebecca Nelson, violins Jenny Stirling, viola Jennifer Morsches and Timothy Merton, cellos Michael Leopold, lute/theorbo and Michael Beattie, organ. The Sarasa Ensemble is a collective of extraordinary international instrumentalists and vocalists who perform classical music of outstanding quality, spanning the 17th to the 21st centuries, on both period and modern instruments, and bring this music to diverse communities.

For 60 years, the Musicians from Marlboro touring program has brought memorable performances from Vermont’s legendary chamber music school and festival to national audiences. The first of three Marlboro touring ensembles this season is led by Lysander Trio violinist Itamar Zorman. Their program features Britten’s Phantasy for string trio and oboe, his first work to gain major international recognition, as well as Shostakovich’s introspective, sardonic, and elegiac String Quartet No. 8, a work dedicated to the victims of war and fascism. The program concludes with the youthful brilliance of the 16-year-old Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quintet in A Major.
