Learn the art of needle felting. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn the basics of needle felting and make a dinosaur of their choice from loose roving wool as part of the “Unearth a Story” Adult Summer Reading Program. This free class is open to anyone 13 years old and up. Materials will be provided, but space is limited and registration is required. This event is part of the Brooks Memorial Library’s “Unearth A Story” Adult Summer Reading program and sponsored by the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library.

Fractured, Not Broken, is a collaborative quilt project connecting people inside and outside prison walls. We invite you to join in the hand-stitching of Interaction’s Prison Quilt in the Main Reading Room from 5-7 PM on Monday, August 10th — poignantly on International Prisoners’ Justice Day. This project had an initial goal to provide a space for incarcerated Vermonters to reflect on and share their experience of incarceration, while also tapping into the healing and transformational power of telling their stories through art. As the project developed, it became important to expand the project to include the hands of the community that will welcome home these incarcerated individuals. The incarcerated quilters are JA, DC, DF, QG, FN, JO, and TR. The completed quilt will hang in the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center in September – October 2026.  All are welcome to visit the library to add your own stitch before it is celebrated at the museum. Workshop III: Walnut Ink Still Life with Vermont Stones — Saturday, August 15 – REGISTER ONLINE In this meditative workshop, create your own cairn, or stone stack temporary sculpture, with local Vermont stones. River Gallery School Teaching Artist, Kate Milliken, will guide participants in creating still life paintings of their individual stone stacks with natural walnut ink. Walnut Ink is made from walnut husks and dries in a rich, brown sepia tone and is great for experimenting with layering.    Unearth Your Creativity! These hour-and-a-half workshops will focus on the use of natural materials and the skill of close observation, a vital gift of drawing from life, which connects the visual arts with the sciences. Throughout these workshops, the emphasis is on learning how to see the natural world through a new lens. Drawing from observation and using local materials will foster a deeper connection between art and science while contributing to the understanding of our local environment. Participants are welcome to attend one or all workshops, and all sessions are free. Registration is required. The Sci-Fi Reading Group will meet in the Quiet Reading Room from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to discuss Super Extra Grande by Yoss! In a distant future in which Latin Americans have pioneered faster-than-light space travel, Dr. Jan Amos Sangan Dongo has a job with large and unusual responsibilities: he’s a veterinarian who specializes in treating enormous alien animals. Mountain-sized amoebas, multisex species with bizarre reproductive processes, razor-nailed, carnivorous humanoid hunters: Dr. Sangan has seen it all. When a colonial conflict threatens the fragile peace between the galaxy’s seven intelligent species, he must embark on a daring mission through the insides of a gigantic creature and find two swallowed ambassadors—who also happen to be his competing love interests. The Sci-Fi Reading Group meets the third Monday of every month and is open to curious minds, whether or not they’ve read this month’s selection.
