Some legends note that Halloween began as a Celtic tradition more than 2000 years ago, during the time of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Gathering together for food and games, the Celtic tribes were marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter. Later, Irish immigrants coming to the United States popularized the holiday, where by people would get dressed up in costumes and ask for money and food throughout their neighborhoods. This Mexican holiday involves people coming together to pray for and to remember friends and family members who have died. The multi-day holiday is also known as "Día de los Muertos." It is meant to be a day of celebration rather than mourning.
