Originating with a story posted online in 2003 in which April 1 was deemed to be Atheist Day, this annual holiday (now recognized on March 23) focuses on those who do not believe in god. The term ‘atheism’ first emerged in medieval Europe more than 400 years ago and was used to describe those who rejected the thought of a higher power. Today, Atheist Day is meant to recognize the struggle of atheists to live authentic lives in many parts of the world and the fight to openly affirm one’s atheism. Approximately 2% of the world’s population does not believe in and follow the practices of any religion (Happy Days 365). Also known as TDOV, this day of visibility is dedicated to recognizing the resilience and accomplishments of the transgender community. Rachel Crandall, a U.S.-based transgender activist, founded this day in 2009 to raise awareness for the incredible burden of discrimination faced by transgender people.
