About The Vermont State Fair The Vermont State Fair is an agricultural fair managed by The Rutland County Agricultural Society. The first Vermont State Fair took place in 1846, making it one of the oldest state fairs in the United States. Originally named the Rutland State Fair, the event started out as a one day event. The first fair took place in a field near Castleton, with Fredrick Button as the first President of the Rutland County Agricultural Society. The fair became popular enough that, in 1849, the Rutland Railroad began putting extra cars on their trains to bring people from all over Vermont and Western New York to visit. After moving around Rutland County for a few years, the Rutland Fair grew closer to Rutland City, sometimes setting up on land owned by John Cain (now Grove Street, north of Crescent) or on the old Baxter Estate. The Fair was given a permanent home in 1856. The land at 175 South Main Street in Rutland, VT was originally known as the Rutland County Park. The fair, which was officially renamed in 1972 as the "Vermont State Fair" is still held at this location today. The Fair has had top name entertainers that included Loretta Lynn, Buck Owens, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Conway Twitty, Ronnie Milsap, Charlie Pride, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, Charlie Daniels Band, Vince Gill, Scotty McCreery, and Jeff Dunham.

Get ready for a local race series that’s all about fun and friendly competition: the 10th annual Bike Bum race series returns starting June 25th! The 10-week race series is held on Wednesday afternoons (2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.) from June 25 to August 27. All racers must check in at the top of the course by 4:30pm each week in order to participate. Sign up to ride solo or form a team of up to five people. Teams may be made up of any combination of age categories & skill levels. Teams require a minimum of three people in order to score points. Racers will be placed in classes by age and will have one timed run each week. Rider scores will be based on the Division (see below) and Class they are in. NEW FOR THIS YEAR: Bike Bum is offering A and B Divisions to increase the weekly competition, with the A Division competing on the upper & middle (black & blue) sections of Rabbit Hole and the B Division competing using the original course on the lower section (green) of Rabbit Hole. A Division riders should be intermediate or expert bikers and/or have been racers in this series before—contact a race organizer if you are unsure of which Division to choose. ALL RIDERS (regardless of division) will check in each week at the tent near the START of Rabbit Hole. Click HERE to Register The fun won’t stop when you cross the finish line! Come hang out, eat your lunch, or do absolutely nothing except put your toes in the grass (or not—we don’t judge). Touch Grass Tuesday is a casual weekly gathering on the library lawn meant to help us all slow down, reconnect, and enjoy being outside—together. This event is made possible by Rutland Restorative Justice Center, the Rutland Free Library and Come Alive Outside. 🌱 Why bother? Science says touching grass literally helps: Lower stress and anxiety Improve mood and focus Regulate your nervous system Boost creativity and immune function Make you feel more connected (to the earth and your neighbors) Whether you stay for five minutes or the whole two hours, you’re welcome. Come solo, bring a friend, or just wander by and wave.
