We invite you to pause and create an Altar of Gratitude for our ancestors and loved ones who now walk in other realms. Together, we will give thanks for their presence in our lives and remember the wisdom carried through our traditions — in silence, stillness, and the sacred cycles of life and death. This is a time to honor death as a rite of passage, and to celebrate the wise women and herbal healers who have always worked with the gifts of the Earth to restore balance and harmony. We also wish to bring awareness to how this season is often used for excess and distraction — a celebration of sugar and commerce — instead of reverence and connection. Let us reclaim the power of choice, creating something more aligned with our consciousness and truth. Let’s stop feeding what no longer serves us, and nurture what brings life, meaning, and love. 🌿 Everyone is welcome Please bring: • Seeds, fruits, flowers, rocks, or anything from nature that connects you with love. • A photo or symbol of a loved one (including pets) who has passed, to include on the altar. The Gory Daze Parade and Events began in 2002 as a modest Halloween pastime among friends — a few costumes, a walk, and a bit of music. Twenty-two years later (we’ll forgive the pandemic gap year), it’s become White River Junction’s biggest night of the year, drawing over a thousand costumed revelers to the streets each fall. What was once a quirky neighborhood idea is now an institution — equal parts parade, concert, art happening, and candy-fueled fever dream. If you’ve never been, think of it as a small-town Halloween parade with big-city personality: Klezmer bands, Dracula’s rock ensemble, donuts on strings, and people who genuinely believe “October 32nd” is a real date. Schedule: Saturday, October 32nd (aka November 1, 2025) Downtown White River Junction, Vermont 6:00 PM: JAM Halloween-o-thon Competition — “Till Death Do Us Part” 6:30 PM: Pre-Parade Party at the Main Street Museum with Western Terrestrials 8:00 PM: Gory Daze Parade departs the Museum, led by Brass Balagan, Burlington’s own Klezmer street band (yes, really). 9:00 PM: The Cornball at the Briggs Opera House featuring Dracula & His Band, The Draculas, and Populace. Admission $10 at the door; cash bar with ID. What to Expect Museum Madness: A family-friendly pre-parade gathering at the Main Street Museum (58 Bridge Street), with candy, dancing, and possibly a bonfire — depending on the mood of Mother Nature. The Parade: A .09-mile stroll through downtown White River Junction that somehow takes 40 minutes, depending on costume density and general enthusiasm. Costumes and hand-pushed floats are encouraged; cars are not. The Cornball: Part dance, part Halloween experiment in community endurance. Dracula provides the music.

Join Doug Teschner & Beth Malow for a reading from their new book Beyond the Politics of Contempt! Doug Teschner and Beth Malow believe that amid a climate of widespread contempt and even hatred for people who disagree politically, we can each make important contributions to better our lives, our relationships, and our country. The book includes (1) skills for greater self-awareness of how our reactions impact our health and well-being; (2) ways to mend relationships torn apart by politics and empower people when difficult conversations arise; and (3) actions to rebuild a national culture of kindness, dignity, and respect. Their aim is to find a way to turn the politics of fear and contempt into the politics of hope. Beth Malow is a neurologist and science/health communicator working in public health and climate change and has given a TEDx talk, The Art of Communicating Science. She lives in Quechee, VT and moderates workshops and debates for Braver Angels, the bipartisan non-profit grassroots organization focused on uniting Americans in our divided time. Doug Teschner ran the Peace Corps in Ukraine and led a community education effort to end the Ebola epidemic in Guinea. As Braver Angels New England Regional Leader, he led the effort that led to the creation of a bipartisan caucus in the NH House of Representative where he previously served as a GOP legislator. Doug lives in West Lebanon, NH.

Join author Tyler Alexander for a reading from his new history book If I Can Get Home This Fall! "If I Can Get Home This Fall: A Story of Love, Loss, and a Cause in the Civil War," includes a timeless collection of elegantly written letters by a Vermont soldier (who served in the 6th VT Infantry and later became an officer in a Black regiment-the 19th US Colored Troops) to his wife throughout the course of four terribly long years. The Pulitzer-Prize winning historian James McPherson said, 'These are some of the best and most moving of the thousands of Civil War letters I have encountered.' These letters-and other source material from the time-tell us much about what Vermonters thought about national identity, race, and the meaning of democracy." Tyler Alexander is a proud eighth generation Vermonter whose ancestors settled in Glover, VT during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency in 1804 and continued to live and farm there for two centuries. He loves all that the outdoors in Vermont has to offer across all four seasons: gardening, hiking, maple sugaring, hunting, fishing, cutting firewood, skiing, canoeing, running, biking, and cider pressing. Tyler taught at North Country Union High School in Newport, VT for 17 years and is currently teaching at Champlain Valley Union High School. He has visited several of the places—often with his students—that are described in his book: Antietam, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Washington, DC, and Richmond, VA. He lives with his wife Aimee, and two children, Caroline and Grant.

The Peggy Project is an exhibition that tells the story of Peggy Adams of White River Junction in the context of post-World War II Japan. The exhibit begins with an authentic doll* of a Samurai warrior, representing an accoutrement of a Japanese household in Yokohama in August 1945—the year following Peggy’s birth in 1944. By 1985, Peggy had returned from her “back-to-the-land” days in western Vermont to enroll in a master’s degree program at the School for International Training in Putney, Vermont, in order to become a teacher of English as a Second Language. Hired by the Sumitomo Steel Company, Peggy moved to Osaka, Japan, and established her own home. After eight years in Japan, far from the U.S. and Vermont, she resigned and returned home. The company packed her belongings—essentially the items she had used or acquired—and shipped them back to America. Peggy directed that they be stored in a small barn on her property outside Brandon, Vermont. The 25 boxes remained unopened for some 31 years. This past year, the boxes were finally opened, and the exhibition is made up of those personal effects and collections. The exhibit includes: Pieces of art An impressive Japanese wedding kimono Household goods representative of Japan in the 1980s Assorted ephemera Elegant Japanese fans It reveals aspects of Japanese culture, art, and daily life some 40 years after World War II. Now, 80 years past the war, this exhibition of items—wonderfully preserved over four decades—offers a brief retrospective before the collection is dispersed. *The doll was taken by a U.S. Marine in his role with the earliest occupation troops just days after the dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
