Classes will meet once a week on Wednesdays from September through April. All classes can be taken individually but, when taken consecutively, provide a complete curriculum of fine arts knowledge and techniques. Students who participate in any Homeschool Art classes have the option to submit work to the Homeschool Art Student Exhibition that will be on display in the children’s wing of the museum in May.   Classes begin on September 17th and end on April 22nd.   Projects in the first semester (September-December) will be based on the fundamentals of art. Projects in the second semester (January-April) will be based on combining everything that we learned in the first semester with mixed media and sculpture.

Class Title: Victorian Decoupage Boxes Instructor: Addie Hirschten Cost: $35 Time and date(s): Saturday 2/7 from 2:00PM-4:00 Location: Lecture Room in Art Lab upper level  Skill level: Any Audience: Teen-Adult Description: When mass produced magazines became readily available during the Victorian era artists began using cut printed images as decoration on objects.  In this workshop we will use a variety of vintage images to create our own unique mixed media boxes.  All materials provided.   About the Instructor: Addie Hirschten is a contemporary impressionist painter, art teacher, author of several books and host of the Studio Alchemy Podcast. When working as an art instructor, Hirschten enjoys helping others to develop their own style and artistic voice, not just copy the instructor.  While developing curriculum for the art classroom Hirschten wrote the book, “The Alchemy of Art: Stories for the Classroom,” a collection of folktales and true stories about artists.  Other books written by Hirschten include “The Alchemy of Painting: Developing Your Style and Purpose,” “Start Selling Your Art: A Guide to Starting a Professional Art Business” and “The Alchemy of Symbols.” Hirschten has recently moved to Abingdon and is renovating an old church to be a home and art studio. We will work with processes including block carving and printing, stenciling, glue resist, and wax resist on cotton bandanas, handkerchiefs, and flour sack towels. The focus of this class is less on finished product and more on process and experimentation with the goal of getting participants comfortable with printing techniques, unfamiliar tools, and layering color and imagery.

Photography is so much more than a quick phone snap the hands-on experience of analog processes are undeniably fascinating. Here is your opportunity to get a glimpse into the world of darkroom film photography and alternative processes. Get to Know Your Film Camera introduces students to the basics of shooting with a 35mm film camera. The first part of the class will be spent going over basic camera use and exposure of shooting a roll of Black & White film on the Museum campus. You’ll learn how to load film in your camera, receive tips for shooting manually, and receive 1 on 1 time with the instructor to ask any questions. Morgan Ford is a Fine Art Photographer specializing in B&W Medium Format Photography. Morgan’s  love of art & photography started at a very young age with a sketchbook always in hand, she took her first photography class in highschool and fell in love with the process of light and catching brief moments in time.  Morgan studied at Brooks Institute of Photography and went on to work in advertising in San Francisco after college. After leaving California and advertising behind she resumed her passion for film photography and working in the darkroom. Morgan has had exhibits all over the country showing her Fine Art B&W Photography of beautiful countrysides, wild horses, and dilapidated buildings. She currently resides in Abingdon, VA and has an art gallery on Main St. where she represents regional artists.
