April 21 is the date of a special election across Virginia, and robust voter turnout is expected. Because most Chesterfield County schools serve as voting sites:Students will not come to school April 21.To make up this time, May 28 will become a full day for students on the traditional calendar. (Previously, May 28 was an early-dismissal day.) 12-month employees will report to work April 21.This calendar change will provide an additional day of end-of-the-year testing because schools do not test on early-dismissal days. For continuity of learning, teachers will provide April 21 assignments for students to complete at home. Because the Virginia Department of Education has shared that, under Virginia law, remote learning days may only be used for severe weather or emergency situations, remote instruction on April 21 cannot count toward instructional hours.Here is additional information:School offices and central offices will be open April 21.Principals will provide more information for families and staff members after spring break (March 30-April 3).Students on the year-round calendar at Bellwood Elementary will also be out of school April 21; however, no further changes are being made to Bellwood’s calendar in regard to makeup time.Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we continue to help students achieve their potential.
