Join members of HFCI at our annual meeting and program. You do not have to be an HFCI member to attend, but we hope you will join! Our guest speaker is Dr. Missy Cummings, Professor and Director of GMU’s new Mason Autonomy and Robotics Center. The Promises and Perils of AI While AI can show up in many everyday applications from shopping to management of home automation, it is the application of AI in safety-critical systems like transportation and medicine that raises important questions about its capabilities. Prof. Cummings will discuss why AI is struggling to gain traction in safety-critical systems and what changes are needed to achieve positive outcomes. Bio As one of the U.S. Navy’s first female fighter pilots and an engineer, Mary “Missy” Cummings is accustomed to breaking barriers and solving problems. A Naval officer and military pilot, Cummings was one of the U.S. Navy’s first female fighter pilots, and among the first female graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy. She is now the Professor and Director of George Mason University’s Autonomy and Robotics Center (MARC).  She holds faculty appointments in the Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science Departments. She is an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Fellow and recently served as the senior safety advisor to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Cummings received her BS in Mathematics from the U.S. Naval Academy, her MS in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, and her PhD in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia.  She comes to George Mason University from her former position at Duke University.

Enjoy a free guided walking tour through Old Town Fairfax. See the original Courthouse (built in 1800) where George and Martha Washington’s wills are stored. Explore sites of Civil War violence, espionage, and unlikely romance centered around that Rebel bandit, John S. Mosby. And discover local grandees like Ratcliffe, Farr, and Willard, whose legacies formed our City. The tour starts at the front of the Historic Fairfax Courthouse (corner of Main St. and Chain Bridge Rd.) We recommend you wear a hat and sturdy walking shoes, and bring a bottle of water.
