The 2026 VCUarts MFA Thesis Exhibition will premiere cutting-edge works from twenty-eight emerging artists and designers, representing the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts departments of Craft/Material Studies, Graphic Design, Kinetic Imaging, Painting + Printmaking, Photography + Film, and Sculpture + Extended Media. Presented over two rounds at the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU’s Markel Center, the thesis exhibition is the culmination of two years of intensive research and practice, showcasing the creativity, dynamism, exploration, and invention that make VCUarts one of the nation’s leading schools of art and design. This exhibition was curated by Egbert Vongmalaithong, assistant curator of the ICA, and guest curator Taylor Jasper, Susan and Rob White Associate Curator of Visual Arts of the Walker Art Center. The exhibition identity was designed by Charles O’Leary. Filmed entirely in Richmond on a shoestring budget, local director Ken Brisby’s 2025 film Mom, I’m on Drugs (1 hr., 30 min.) follows the journey of a punk whose night out turns into a terrifying hero’s journey. The film title comes from a coming-out queer conversation the director had with his parents as a teen. Catchy songs by Brisby’s synthpop band, Stephanie, form the film’s soundtrack. About New Richmond Filmmakers:A sampling of the city’s thriving filmmaking community, this series celebrates emerging voices in Richmond’s up-and-coming film scene. “How to Succeed in the Arts Without Really Trying” is a performance/lecture by artist Paul Rucker. Rucker will use factual information interwoven with satire to talk about his personal journey from working as a janitor at the Seattle Art Museum to opening his own art museum, from his first grant of $200 to multimillion-dollar grants from foundations. This lecture will include Rucker performing on cello and bass as well as an interactive performance lecture that invites audience engagement. The talk will be sprinkled with history, comedy, satire, and contemporary fables around navigating the art word, and succeeding without even trying. About the Artist:Multimedia artist Paul Rucker is an assistant professor and Curator for Creative Collaboration at VCUarts. He is currently an iCubed Arts Research Fellow and is leading the development of Richmond’s Cary Forward Museum, an interpretive arts center operating at the intersection of art, artifacts, and history. Note: This performance contains explicit language, adult themes, and discussions on mental health, including depression and suicide. It may also include graphic depictions of police violence and lynching. Viewer discretion is advised.

Fashioning Subjects Through Meaning and AgencyFashion Design + Merchandising Assistant Professor, Jeannine Diego, will share her exploration of fashion as a site of embodied agency where self-making and politics intersect. Working with multiple layers of meaning and across a diversity of media, she will present insights from recent and ongoing projects in academia, film, and fashion design. The talk will address central themes that inform both her scholarly and creative practice, and will journey through key moments of her films. Speaker Bio:With over 25 years of fashion industry experience in various contexts and regions, including New York, New Delhi and Mexico City, traversing a broad range of markets and competencies, Jeannine Diego’s extensive professional practice informs her research and creative projects. Her areas of interest lie at the intersections of fashion and politics, as expressed through self-making practices, particularly in Cuba and Mexico. Her research, which has been published in peer-reviewed journals, has also found expression in documentary film projects, including A Wardrobe, An Island (Best Documentary at the Shanghai Indie Film Festival 2025, Semifinalist at the Tokyo Women’s Film Festival 2025), Becoming La Bruja, and Body Double. She serves on the editorial board of Critical Studies in Fashion and Beauty, and is a member of the Union of Concerned Researchers in Fashion (UCRF).
